Former Kaduna State Governor and founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has officially resigned from the party, citing deep-seated concerns over its trajectory and leadership, ThisDay Nigeria reports.

In a statement released Monday, El-Rufai lamented the decline of the APC from its founding ideals, accusing the party’s current leadership of ignoring pressing internal issues and sidelining its key .

According to him, despite his efforts to address these concerns both privately and publicly, the ruling party has failed to uphold the progressive values it once championed.

“It had been my hope since 2013 that my personal values and that of the APC would continue to align up to the time I choose to retire from politics,” he said. “However, developments in the last two years confirm that there is no desire on the part of those who currently control and run the APC to acknowledge, much less address, the unhealthy situation of the party.”

El-Rufai, who played a crucial role in securing APC’s electoral victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023, expressed disappointment that the party has abandoned its founding principles. Reflecting on his eight-year tenure as governor, he highlighted his istration’s focus on education, healthcare, infrastructure development, and investment attraction—principles he argues are no longer priorities within the APC.

“These records count for little in the current APC that has castrated its organs and treated its hip with contempt in the last two years. I find this no longer acceptable,” he added.

Following extensive consultations with political associates, mentors, and ers nationwide, El-Rufai announced his decision to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), which he believes offers a more credible platform for progressive governance. Beyond merely switching allegiance, he called on opposition leaders and other political parties to unite under a single democratic front to challenge the APC in future elections.

“As a member of the SDP, I will focus on engaging with and persuading other opposition leaders and parties to us and congregate under a unified democratic platform to challenge the APC in all elections and bye-elections between now and 2027,” he declared.

El-Rufai’s defection adds to the growing list of political heavyweights who have either distanced themselves from the APC or expressed discontent with its leadership. His move to the SDP could signal a realignment of opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As the former governor embarks on a new political journey, the question remains: will his defection inspire a mass exodus from the ruling party, or will the APC weather yet another storm? One thing is certain, El-Rufai’s departure has set the stage for a high-stakes political battle in the months and years ahead.

Well I don’t believe anyone, I don’t belive any party or any association you can find Nigerian politicians anymore. They so low to the extent that this act can be one of their scene and plots again, so if you don’t belong to them or close to them, stop misinforming any audience on Nigerian politicians. Zero integrity and no regards for the populace, they don’t care about our feelings or emotions, their poticking games are not always for ordinary man but their collective greediness.

I’m not happy this is the type of politics we know only….. how about bragging who is the first to own first class medical hospitals, first class manufacturing companies, best senator to sponsor 50,000 graduates, first governor to empower and absorbed all the youths for various employment with lots of betterments. As in why can’t a school cert holder earn 1m monthly, with the way you all turned the country down. We the masses are only the one to make pay for their nemesis.

Sane Nigerian should stop bordering on these politicians, their affairs can’t be explained logically. In advance countries, he will make a public announcement and tell his followers reasons before decamping, those reasons will form a very strong alliance among his followers

Cos I hit front page, I will be happy if you can throw away your region mindset, and think like just a Nigerian collectively, and stop stereotyping every one to their roots. I a naija man that’s enough to define us.

Freedom of association is his fundamental right.

But he didn't even go to Labour Party.

Peter Obi is gone! Labour Party is gone! Maybe Peter Obi will him in SDP.

Well, i am here to let you know that SDP will divide the votes thereby paving way for Tinubu's reelection.

Game plan On!

Peter Obi has lost again.

All I see here is someone who knows he can't defeat Tinubu head on but is willing to show to Tinubu that his presidency is a gift from the North.

El rufai contesting will divide Tinubu's northern votes, but won't fetch him much if Atiku is also on ballot.

That is why Elrufai is canvassing for a new alliance between the North and South South, to emerge the winner by slim margin.

Peter Obi is guaranteed SE votes, Tinubu is guaranteed SW votes, The north is still deciding, SS / Rivers is really important to Tinubu, that is why Wike is where he is now and allowed to trouble a sitting governor.

Only an extremely ignorant person or a politician will believe that focus on education, healthcare, infrastructure development, and investment attraction was higher before than now. Those who understand politics know why people like Kwakwanso and El Rufai want to keep their political base at any cost. It's 2031, not 2027.

AMINDA:
With this movement, Tinubu's sojourn in the North has been dealt a fatal blow. Where will his 5.6m northern votes come from? SDP will adopt Atiku for the Presidency. Mind you that Atiku's 2023 votes remain largely untouched. He's now set to consolidate on his margins especially in the North. Can Tinubu do the same in the South, especially with the probability of Peter Obi contesting as well? I think not. 2027 will be a 3-horse race and this time, every region will largely vote for their own son. The region with the largest voting bloc shall triumph.
A coalition is brewing so forget all these L. P, S. D. P. It will all ve semantics at d end of the day

If a coalition with Obi materialises, the election will be over before 12 noon.

Area boys calculated that Elrufai will run for the Presidency in 2027. That was the advise they gave to Tinubu that made him sideline and humiliate Elrufai, his most vocal Northern er thinking he will leave the APC to go contest for the Presidency in another party, thereby splitting Northern votes. It was a miscalculation! Northerners will largely vote one-way in 2027 and it will not be for Tinubu. Elrufai need not be on the ballot to influence things. We will all learn politics together.

Congratulations.

No one tied your political placenta to APC.

When Tinubu got frustrated with AD, he went on to form AC, then ACN and merged to form APC.

When Buhari got frustrated with ANPP, he took his followers to form C and nurtured the party. He merged his party with others to form APC.

Buhari and Tinubu showed they could build a party into a formidable regional powerhouse and merged to dislodge the PDP.

I always advise politicians to test their capacity by building parties. Let El Rufai build the SDP to a formidable party. Let him also gather disgruntled elements to build the party so that 2027 would be more competitive.

Meanwhile, did El Rufai decamp alone or he had followers he took with him? How many of his former commissioners followed him?

I wish him all the best in his endeavors, in as much as APC has failed us, he would still have remained if he was part of the government. My point is none of these politicians care about the general welfare of the citizens, is just about interest for them. Don't be surprised if Tinubu sef him if that will guarantee his stay. 😂
