A United States-based Nigerian woman, Abayomi Whint, has been sworn in as a judge for the Kings County New York Civil Court.

This was disclosed in a video tagged, ‘Welcome to the bench, Your Honor!’ via her Instagram page on January 23, 2025.

Whint was among the eight candidates elected as judges in Brooklyn, in November 2024.

In the video, Whint, who was sworn in at Brooklyn Law School, took the oath of office to the cheers of her family and friends, who were dressed in white and green.

She said, “…to discharge the duties of the office of judge for the Kings County New York Civil Court, according to the best of my ability. So help me God.”

Whint practised law primarily in the public sector for over 20 years.

She is an experienced litigator, certified mediator, and arbitrator who specialises in conflict resolution.

Also, Whint participated in organisational leadership, fostering cultures of belonging, team building, and the application of restorative practices as a ReRestortative Circle Keeper.

According to her LinkedIn profile, “she views justice not merely as a concept but as an active commitment to fairness, equity, and truth in every decision.”

A judge at state county level like this in US is more like a civil servant and no kick backs from bribe like in Nigeria. Most bench positions in the US are open and very hard to fill as most attorneys do not want that job . Starting salary for an attorney in US starts from upper $200k in a big law firm but it will take you years to make that from the bench so that’s why it’s not attractive to most US attorneys

Judges are usually elected.

The position is often competitive and glamorous.

Did I mention any where it wasn’t by election? I only didn’t mention it was an off season election along with election of sheriffs where very very few people turn out because most don’t even know the days fixed for that election owing to its insignificance in scheme of elections . Competitive and glamorous are definitely not what it means to most people especially lawyers that know that going for such position when you could earn more in private practice means you don’t know what you are doing as a lawyer

She will never be allowed such position in the deep south, Bible thumbing, racist Trump country.

Congrats to her.
