The Lagos State Government has lamented the persistent operations of Okada riders on the highways in Lagos where they have been banned.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, expressed this concern during a dialogue with journalists in Ikeja on Friday, asking whether Okada should be totally banned in the entire state or not.

Addressing questions at the programme with the theme ‘t Citizens’ Media Engagement Forum,’ Omotoso said motorcyclists kept returning to the areas where they were banned, especially on the highways and bridges, saying it is “a very controversial matter.”

The government keeps taking them off the road and you wonder where the new ones are coming from,” he told the gathering.

Omotoso stressed, “Don’t forget, Okada is not banned all over Lagos, they are banned on major highways, on bridges and in some local governments. So, where they are not banned, they are free to operate. But where they are banned, like on the highways in Mile 2 and others, every time, the Task Force goes there to seize the Okada from them.

Unfortunately, some human rights organisations feel that Okada is a human rights symbol and should be allowed to move freely in the state, I think this is not responsible for us.”

Omotoso lamented that despite the ban, “you still find Okada riders on the bridges, riding against the traffic, even on Eko Bridge, and the more you take them off the street, the more they come. As I have said, Lagos is a victim of its own success.

So there is a new controversy now, should Okada be totally banned everywhere in Lagos or should we stick to this gradual withdrawal? So I will leave it to you, journalists, through your various channels, to let us know the opinions on whether Okada should go (totally or not).

“Because once there is a total ban, the excuse of riding where it was not banned will be out of it.

Instead of a total ban and just seizing okada alone, jail the okada rider and the ridee too to serve as a deterrent to others

It’s not that he didn’t read. Many Nigerians nowadays speak English but lack comprehension. It is an epidemic!

They should endeavor to arrest the enger and let the rider go, that's the only way to achieve the desired result. Try a different approach.

The menace of Okada riders, especially many from the Hausa community, violating traffic laws and riding dangerously is a serious issue in Lagos. Despite bans on highways and bridges, they keep returning, often riding against traffic and endangering lives. This reckless behavior fuels accidents and insecurity.

They should stop wasting their time . You can't stop Okada in Lagos state

Okada emergency is very important in Lagos state. Why not create their own route like BRT

I can't forget this particular day which I took bike from 1004 estate to Ajao Estate, Airport road. It was on Friday, even with the bike, we still spent over 2 hours before getting to my destination. The idea of driving or take a cab, you gat to sleep there

Yes.
It will work.
If the enger pays 5-10K fine per ride, most would abandon Okada
and use alternatives.

Yes. Why not. Do you think they can ban Okada in Lagos state.. Hahaha. Firstly the rate of crime will increase, teenagers will just be giving birth like rats as their parents might have been out of job for some time.

After banning the Okada, would the Lagos state government provide automatic job for the riders? They would create nuisance people from the frustrated Lagosians

This should work, no customer means no business. I mostly don't blame the bikers but their engers. The recklessness and the threat they pose to life far outweigh getting to ones destination quickly.

Allow Okada breathe. Do you have alternative Job for the riders?

Economy is biting. And you want to take them off the road? And how do they survive??
This is a joke. Allow them be.

You destroy their shops. Buildings. And they must survive. Then, Okada they want to take to breathe, you want to take it from them?

Haba! This is crass wickedness.

Lagos state government should allow them survive. Except they have alternative Job for them.
