With the ever increasing price of cement, rods and other vital building materials, we should expect more collapses cos engineers would want to cut cost by trying to buy substandard products leading to a total collapse of the entire structure.

Recently, I saw a building where the engineers used bamboo instead of iron rods as decking and pillar enforcement. The bamboo was placed on the the decking and concrete was poured on it. How long do you think such structure can last before it collapses?

That one no be engineer o, na bricklayer wey dey form builder.

Building collapse has been happening for ages in Nigeria.

It is not a cement thing, it is a lack of regulator thing

Using bamboo is never a problem here, study has shown that bamboo has more tensile strength to iron rods , poor work supervision and inability of using quality materials is the major cause of building collapse in Nigeria

So the collapse of that tall building in Lagos meant that yourbas were killing themselves too.

Also the collapse of a building in the North some time ago meant hausas were killing themselves

Thanks for your clarification

Good news is boring.

Policeman helps young man find his way to a building for an important appointment. Boring.

Policeman extorts young man of 130 thousand naira and 4000 Bitcoin. Front page news.

Use of bad blocks. From the look of the blocks in the rubble, it's obvious that it's substandard.

Thank God the house collapsed now, it wld have been a death trap in future.

Block cannot be the reason why the building collapsed totally. It is more of structural problem, the concrete elements, fo8ndation,slabs, beams and columns.

This is not good.
One of the first things I learnt in the university as an engineering student was not to compromise on quality because it can lead to loss of life.

Most residential buildings in Nigeria were not built by civil engineers. I agree that a good number of civil engineers in Nigeria compromise quality either ignorantly or willingly.

There should be harsh and stringent punishment for those caught wanting to cut corners during pre-construction, construction and post construction stages, it doesn't matter if it's the client or the person handling the project, the culprit must be brought to book doing so will force others to sit up.

This isn't a good one to be honest.

It's a tough battle, man.

You can't even convince them and I understand their stance too, when it's all saud and done, we all do what we think it's best for ourselves.

Best of luck, man.

I'm happy for this collapse ... nobody injured ... the engineer proven to be unfit... may have the certificate but didn't earn it ... maybe bought it.... the owner is the biggest loser ... lose all his investment all because of greed and ego.... one story house is not good enough...must have two storey .

Don't hang your hat where your hand can't reach

After all ... the person who really needs to feel the heat is the city engineer.... he is responsible for inspection ... but ... nobody questions him
