From what I observed here,
Op this is your first time of buying a car,

1. You don't scout cars on the internet especially forums like jiji and expect everything to be same as online, internet cars come with clauses, either the price is higher or the quality of car is less than what was posted, always comes with issues

2. You should have gone to nairaland car section, there are trusted guys there who you will do business with and have rest of mind

3. Berger is not a place for newbies on car issues, I almost got cheated trying to buy a Kia Rio 2009 from one guy I met over Facebook, na God and my instincts save me,

4. You paid that money cos you were excited to own the car and felt you may not get to buy it when you are ready so you drop over 70percent deposit,
Business ppl are greedy, that's what's keeps a business afloat, greed, that money you dropped I just pray this person you are transacting with doesn't feast on your ignorance

5. The chances of getting that same vehicle or getting it in same condition is 50% cos right now you are at a disadvantage,
Look for the balance and go back there unannounced, possibly on Saturday or tomorrow, go straight to your car and request for the papers and key else , Sorry oo

6. You are really naive, you don't even have pictures of the interior, engine chassis or even the full car, if they swap it by painting a lesser standard you won't know,

I was worried about this exact same thing. There was no time for lawyers and besides my lawyer isn't in Lagos. But we signed a proper agreement. I'll post the photos here soon. The agreement includes the chassis number of the car I bought, so, that should prevent them from trying to give me even another model of the same car.

Before you complete payment for that car ...kindly request the custom paper ...you will see the C number ...ask someone to direct you to the custom office near there at berger ...You will give the officer like 3k or more depending on what they charge now .He will send a reprint to your whatsap phone ...Ask him if the payment is okay to avoid custom problem on the way ...if he says is okay the go back to where that parked ...open the door ...you will see where the Chasis number is ...ensure it tallies with what is on the custom paper...or you can check the Chassis number on the windscreen ...confirm it tallies with that on the paper give to you ......This are due diligent you would ve done b4 even depositing . I.pray everything goes well...but if you enter those one chance inside there that doesn't belong to association...na you sabi ...I m praying for you ...that money you deposited is big

Let me give you one experience I had at berger ...I got to berger with my mechanic on Friday...I saw acura mdx 2011 for 7.5m by then ...After checking and confirming that the catalyst is intact ...I made a deposit of 1m to complete the full payment on Monday...very early Monday I went back with my mechanic...behold the car started smoking ....they claimed is morning dew ...but my.mechanic insist is not ...on a second check...we realised the have removed the catalyst ...immediately I had to invite the police ...demanding for my money ...cos at thst pint I have lost interest in the deal ...There chairman took us to his office and they resolved that I should choose any car of my choice within same range ...I had to choose another one after confirmation every thing is intact...My brother you don't have to make 10m deposit over a car thst cost 12.5m...Your deposit shoukd have been atleast 1or 2m cos anything can happen ...if I deposit 10m for a car if 12.5m .I most go with thst car ....it most park in my house ....they may still hold the custom paper ...10m is too much as deposit...That person thst accompanied you is like an inexperience person...I suspect he may have some deals with them ...judging from how he is pushing you to make deposit .

Finally , you are on your own on this matter ...when you wanna buy a car go with your trusted mechanic ...confirm everything using scanner ... more importantly there us a custom office at that berger market go there with the c number and ask the cudtom man to get you a reprint and advice you if payment was made in full ir compromise ..if compromise ...what's the risk of it ...cos you don't want custom impounding your ride while travelling . Your next step is to raise the balance by all means, come back to Lagos and get someone that will revalidate the car for you with scanner, also confirm the documentation and make payment as soon as possible. You actually took high risk with the way you went about it, your uncle should have guided you better, he really messed up.

Also, everything that identify him in the particulars, from the shipping documents to the custom documents, always refer to his business name followed by the association. He even mentioned I should reserve 30k to pay the association when I come to pick the car.

Those IRS agents on ground were already hanging around as we negotiated with the dealer. She couldn't even wait for me to finish making the deposit before approaching me for the license plate, insurance, and other documentation. Cost me an extra 100k. I have already received sms alerts with my license plate number ed to the car.

The only other thing is the custom reference number. I have it but I haven't checked it out the way you described. The dealer was even encouraging me to go and do exactly what you said. That I'll find out everything is in order. He gave me photocopies of the vehicle papers.

Demand for the custom papers . Tale across you will see custom office ...the officer there will use the C NUMBER to get a reprint from there system . As for his advice if the duty is good or bad cos you are traveling to the east with the car . Based on his advice you will know what to do. Ensure the chassis number on the windscreen or body of the car is same with that on the custom papers. To avoid being given fake paper.

Registration of the car

1.Allow the person who wants to it to snap the vin number on the body of the car himself. Incase he makes mistake only him will be blamed

2. Depending on the state ...for example if you want lsgos stion ...it can easily be check and confirmed via Autoreg...This is to avoid any
Mistake ...mistake will make you a target for police people . They can even claim you bought a stolen car ..

3. You trust alot . You are not suppose to the car near where you bought it . This will afford you the opportunity of not relying on them ..

4. Proper vin check and query need to be done to ascertain if the car has been ed or not . I have witnessed incidents where someone bought a ed car as tokunbo .

2.Autoreg confirmation of your stion

It will cost you money but is better to be safe . Let them.know that you will conform the stion via autireg and if there is error ...you will hold them responsible.

I salute your courage, it shows you have a good heart. Unfortunately, the street is filled with Wolves - many in sheep clothings.

My candid advise is that you should approach loan sharks like Ren money, etc to finance and close the deal today or tomorrow. Go with an experienced mechanic to inspect the car. You can liquidate the loan in November.

As long as your hands are clean and karma isn't chasing you, you have nothing to worry about. But take the lessons here serious because we are in woto woto season and hot bois are really looking for ...

Anyway, long story short, another dealer offered me the 2013 Acura MDX for 12.5 million. I didn't have that cash at the time and couldn't return to Lagos until November. My uncles encouraged me to make part payment on it instead of just going home like that. I was hesitant due to fear of being played but I eventually agreed. I deposited 10 million on the SUV, leaving a balance of 2 million which I promised to bring on the first week of November. This is a photo of the one I paid for. My uncle took the picture with his yeye phone. I didn't even know when he took it.

Don't ever trust car dealership in this Lagos. Infact it's best to buy from direct owner than to buy from car dealers these days.
