Commercial and economic activities were paralysed on Monday across major markets in the commercial cities of Onitsha, Nnewi, Obosi, and Ekwulobia in Anambra State.

Also, there was a low turnout of traders, as most shops in major markets such as Onitsha Main Market, Ochanja Market, Nkpor Motor Parts Market, Electrical Market, and Mgbuka Market, remained under lock and key.

The usual Monday closure of motor parks, banks, petrol stations, schools, offices and law courts was also recorded.

This was contrary to last week’s directive from Governor Chukwuma Soludo during his visit to Onitsha Main Market, where he threatened to seal any shop or plaza that remained closed on Mondays in the name of the sit-at-home.

Soludo had lamented the continuous boycott of activities on Mondays in the South-East, arguing that the zone lost an estimated N19.6bn every Monday.

He warned that any trader or business that refused to open on Mondays would face severe penalties, including the sealing of shops for up to one month.

He then said, “I am here to ensure that your shops are open. From now on, every Monday, the Main Market must be open for business.

“If you fail to open, your shop will be sealed for one week, and if necessary, for up to one month. When you are ready to open, it must be from Monday through Saturday.”

The governor also promised a security presence around the markets, adding that policemen and men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps would be patrolling to maintain law and order.

At the time of filing this report on Monday, the governor was yet to visit the market as promised.

Meanwhile, personnel of the NSCDC were observed patrolling some of the markets, and metropolis, conducting “anti-sit-at-home operation,” while encouraging people to come out.

Some of the traders who came to the markets on Monday stood around their shops for fear that opening posed a threat to their lives and properties.

A textile trader at the Main Market, Udoka, said, “Some of us came around to observe the situation. The presence of the NSCDC officers is encouraging. If they can continue, it will be good.

“Most people are afraid of opening their shops for fear of being attacked. Those that came to the market today are those selling by the roadside.”

The leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafra had, in August 2021, introduced the sit-at-home order every Monday across the southeast to pressure the Federal Government to release its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Although the group suspended the sit-at-home order except on days Nnamdi Kanu would appear in court, the people have continued to observe it for fear of attack.

This situation is just like a case of being in a commercial bus traveling as a enger.

A pastor and a herbalist are among the engers in the bus. Suddenly the herbalist tells the driver to stop and allow him alight because the gods have shown him a sign of an accident ahead should the bus proceed on the journey further.

Then the pastor says " Na lie! This bus is covered by the blood of Jesus "

The driver stops and the herbalist drops from the bus. Now u as a Christian is in doubt whether to believe the word of a pastor who says the bus is covered by the blood of Jesus because he's an occupant or whether to just drop jeje like the herbalist to avoid stories that touch.

In a nutshell, the people ar confused because they are not sure the governor can save them from attacks from IPOB when they go about enforcing the sit at home. They also don't want the governor to lock their shops indefinitely as a he threatened if they don't open on Mondays

The problem these busy body governors failed to understand is that Mondays in Anambra especially onitsha has been set as unofficial resting days for traders.
Nobody hold anybody to open on Mondays oo
but you can never tell us when to open shop and when not to.
Even if Kanu comes out today, I doubt the sit at home will stop.

It was really dumb for someone who is a professor to threaten residents. Soludo behaved like Simon Ekpa by threatening to close down shops that didn't open on monday.

Imagine if a northern governor threatens to seize farms if the farmers refuse to farm because bandits are terrorizing them. That's how dumb Soludo sounded. This year is not the first time, he made similar threat in 2022 and nothing changed.

Only ADEQUATE security will make sit at home to die.

This is useless and irrelevant.....

Mondays are very important for every business minded people but they choose to sit at home....

Anyway, I'd I was the governor, I'd pay civil servants in percentage and best on performance....

Stop writing rubbish. No one is confused. And if the igbos feel that IPOB and other pro Biafra groups are talking rubbish, the sit at home thing won't hold for long, and anyone that tries to enforce it will be burnt to death. Take my words for it. The fact that people still obey that in the face of the dire economic realities, should tell you that they genuinely beleive in it.

The major problem with those of you against the sit at home, is that you believe your own skewed propoganda. You have been selling the false narrative that the traders were being forced to observe that. Maybe at the initial stage, a level of enforcement took place, but right now the people are genuinely upset not just with Kanus continued incarceration, but also with the general anti igbo oppressive governance of the ruling APC. Infact, the APC ruination of the country is the main reason Kanu continues to be very relevant.

If any politician from the east fails to realise the peoples anger on these issues and frames his politics accordingly, he is on his own. Soludo has been doing a lot of damage to his brand with his political outbursts and anti IP0B rethorics. At the moment, he should be the voice that assembles the opinions of his people together, in other to find solutions to the problems, but no, he would rather put himself against the same people that elected him. That is terrible politics if you ask me.

You come over here spewing balderdash about something you know nothing about. Crying more than the bereaved. People told you why they're protesting, but you will reel out all sorts of exotic reasons as to why they do what they do. All you guys want is the peace of the graveyard in the face of evil, because the evil status quo benefits you.

It's not like all of the traders like locking up their shops on Mondays ....

It's rather the fear of being attacked by UGM and the lack of trust in the state government if providing adequate security......

Anambra dey hot ..... Cult wars in most towns and villages, including Awka the state capital.....

Other criminal gangs also on rampage.... the sports crew on their way to uyo who were attacked recently ....

Provide security, and you will see many shops opening on Mondays ....
