How Representing Nigeria at the Rio Olympics Cost Mikel Obi His Place at Chelsea

There has been a rumor about how Mikel Obi's decision to represent Nigeria at the 2016 Olympics cost him his place at Chelsea under the then Chelsea coach, Antonio Conte.

The former Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi, who happened to be the second-longest serving player at Stamford Bridge after John Terry, opted to play for the Dream Team VI in Rio that year instead of participating in pre-season preparations with Chelsea.

In this live interview with Livescore, Mikel explained how that decision ultimately led to his departure from the club.

Because you were surplus to requirement at chelsea at that particular time was the reason you left for the olympics.

At what age was Mo Salah kicked out of the team a d was he given enough match to prove himself??

Same Mo Salah was kicked out of the same Chelsea squad.

keep quiet there n stop d victim mentality

When Mikel played actively for the team, what was his contribution at Chelsea?

A man known for back all his life

A player who couldn't start an attack but is known to kill attacks with back

So playing for Nigeria made him sit on d bench for over 8 years?

So d like of drogba, kalou, malouda didn't play for their country at one time while at Chelsea?

The guy is less than an average player, he's only lucky Chelsea tolerated him for that long

Ask yourself how many goals does he have for Chelsea for good 10 years even as a midfielder n compare that to rudiger or Terry record

U even carry your victim mentality enter sport, oya blame tinubu for this one too now
Is Mikel a striker or a forward player ?… why are goals so important from him?

There is no need to attack the guy. I ed that incidence vividly. Conte was not happy and confined the guy to the bench. Agreed, if he was of European origin, Conte would not have done that. He was just looking for a way to bench the guy and his absence during the preseason provided him an ample opportunity to finish off Mikel. Lets take it easy on him. He said the truth. This usually happens in football, especially to African players that chose to represent their national team. But, I guess, if Mikel was superb, Conte would have reconsidered him in his starting lineup. Even Arsene Wenger almost did same to Kanu Nwankwo and claimed that he was allowing the Kanu to recover from jet lag and injury.

2016/17, Kante Played the No.6 role. After being the best midfielder In the league the previous season. Would you bench Kante for Mikel as a coach?

I like Mikel. He tried.
However, he did not live up to his potentials.

But I like him.

Mikel Obi is a bundle of talent never realized. He started better than Messi then retrogressed so badly afterwards.

Each time I think of him...all I see is the Nigerian problem...huge potentials, no result.
