CAFWCLQ: Edo Queens Thrash Ainonvi FC To Win Title

August 23, 2024

Edo Queens defeated Benin Republic’s Ainonvi FC 3-0 in the final of WAFU B CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers at the Stade de la Paix, Bouake on Friday night.

The Nigerian champions also sealed a place in the CAF Women’s Champions League following the win.

Captain Suliat Abideeen gave Moses Aduku’s side the lead just before the break.

Enterprising forward Emem Essien doubled the Benin City club lead on the hour mark.

Elizabeth Ukandu scored an own goal 14 minutes from time to make the scoreline more emphatic for the Nigerian side.

Edo Queens entered the history as the second Nigerian club to win the competition after Bayelsa United claimed the title in 2022.

Photo 1) Teams that have qualified for the Champions League so far.

Photo 4) Today's results.

How teams qualify for the competition.

There are 6 African sub-confederations (West Africa has been divided into 2). Each sub-confederation will provide one club and the 6 clubs are usually ed by the host and the defending champions to create an 8 team Champions League competition. Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa are defending champions.

The 6 sub-confederations are:

1) Union of North African Football (UNAF)

2) West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone A

3) West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B

4) Union des Fédérations de Football d'Afrique Centrale (UNIFFAC)

5) Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA)

6) Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA)

Godwin Obaseki (GGO) @GovernorObaseki

I congratulate our darling ladies for their superlative performance, emerging champions of the CAF Women’s League WAFU Zone B qualifiers. They gave a good of themselves and have kept to their promise of making us proud.

Over the past eight years, we have committed to raising the bar in ensuring equal pay with their male counterparts to serve as motivation. They have proven that we didn’t make the wrong decision.

This is their first sub-continental championship and they have put up a good showing. It is indeed a sign of greater things to come.

I commend the team for their well-deserved victory. I urge them to continue with the brilliant form and proceed to replicate their impressive feat at the CAF Women’s Champions League.

Are they all biological women though?

There is one face I saw now that gave me pause.

I did a double take, circled back and am still not sure that person is a real woman.

This what leadership, motivation and funding can do to a team. Obaseki has done extremely well in sport especially football.

I learnt the players of insurance and edo queens are of the highest paid in the country.

Enugu rangers have also also progressed in their first round of qualifying matches. I think they have one more to play before progressing to the group stages. Wishing them successful campaigns

Do you know the man in the black T-shirt? He is the person that Nigerians always looked forward to seeing during Olympics, Commonwealth and All Africa Games opening ceremonies in the 1980s and early 1990s. He was Team Nigeria's captain at all those events and he usually carried our flag (I think he was the longest serving captain).

His name is Yusuf Ali and he was the African and Commonwealth long jump champion (I think he held the African and Commonwealth record).

He is currently the chairman of the Edo State Sports Council.

Edo Queens FC @EQFCofficial

Energy levels soaring! Yussuf Alli (OLY) arrives in Abidjan to lift the Queens’ spirits, injecting an extra dose of motivation and fueling the Queens' determination for the final showdown tomorrow!
