Four hundred and one chairmen and of caretaker committees running Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas in Osun State have all resigned their positions.

Those that resigned include; 69 caretaker chairmen and 332 caretaker drawn from each of the 332 wards in the state.

Letters of resignation of the chairmen circulated on social media on Wednesday but a clear reason behind their resignation was not given.

In one of the letters seen by PUNCH, the caretaker chairman of Odo-Otin local government area, Okuku, Adewale Adeyinka, said he was quitting office to pursue other opportunities to serve his people.

The letter addressed to Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, dated July 17, 2024, partly read, “It is with a sense of duty and respect for our democratic principles that I write to tender my resignation from my position as Chairman of the Caretaker Committee for Odo-Otin Local Government, effective immediately.

“As I move on to pursue further opportunities to serve my people, I want to assure you that the good work we have started will not end.

“I remain committed to ing the growth and development of Odo-Otin Local Government in any capacity I can.”

When ed for comment on Wednesday, the immediate past chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria in Osun State, Sarafadeen Awotunde, said all the 69 caretaker chairmen and 332 drawn from different wards across the state have resigned their positions since the Supreme Court has declared them as illegal office occupants.

Asked to confirm the resignation of the 332 caretaker and the chairmen, Awotunde said, “Since we already called them caretaker, I don’t think there is any appropriate word to use than that they resigned. Nobody sacked them.

“Caretakers have temporary time to spend. It means their time is over. If you look at it critically, you will see that the Supreme Court has given a verdict. So whatever is called caretaker now is illegal. So, there is nothing like a caretaker in Nigeria again.”

In Osun State, there are 30 local government areas, 32 local council development authorities, 6 area councils and one istrative office.

The last set of caretaker committee chairmen and were appointed by Adeleke in August 2023 and their tenure of office was extended by 6 months in February 2024.

This is the kind of mess Makinde wants to continue in Nigeria.

A lot of Governors like Adeleke don't deserve to be close to government house. The clueless man has not hold a local government election since last year.

Why can't he keep on paying their allowance and salary with state funds till he hold an election? Is that not why he appointed them before? So because he won't be getting Local government funds for Osun state, he quickly forced them to resign

I will be so shock if this clueless man is reelected in Osun state

Obviously the supreme Court judgement renders their position untenable. They had to go.

This is the kind of positive things we want happening in this country, irrespective of the brain behind it.

With the legislature proposing one tenure of six years for all executive leaders and federal INEC conducting LGA elections, Tinubu is obviously getting these reforms right.

The next big step should be a bill to restructure the country, make states control their resources and pay 10% taxes to the FG.

I love the speed at which this istration is moving. It shows that Tinubu came prepared.

Oya na...

Dem go go contest and most likely win..

The election will definitely not be free and fair, but it's better than them being a caretaker that can be removed or replaced by the Governor at will.

Way to go

Story for the gods. You guys always celebrate too early.

Thats how you guys were celebrating subsidy removal and floating of the naira....a twin policies that wrecked the economy and damaged Tinubu's illegitimate presidency for good

401? How many local councils do they have in Osun.
One chairman per council, LCDA, local council and area office. Then one rep per ward, 332 wards in total

Local government atonomy will cut down the ego of the Governor's. This means a president can be President without the dependent of the Governor.

Your writeup shows your bais against those two governors you mentioned. Don't you have them as APC governors too. You just want to deliberately spread hatred against them. Recheck their performance metrics and see that you goofed totally.

They were not forced to resigned the Supreme Court judgement knocked everyone of them out including Fubala gragra caretakers in Rivers.

The earlier they resign the better for them than been disgraced out and I'm sure some people from a particular region will reman defiant to the judgement and call it wizard hunting and go on internet to start barking like chiwawa.
