The Congolese army has announced that it “foiled a coup” early morning on Sunday 19 May 2024 and that it has arrested the perpetrators, including several foreigners.

The announcement was made by DRC army spokesman Brigadier-General Silvain Ekenge via a televised speech.

This followed a gunfight between armed men in military uniform and the guards of federal legislator Vital Kamerhe, leaving 3 people dead in the capital Kinshasa.

The clash occurred about 2 kilometers from the presidential palace in an area where some embassies are located, and it is not clear if the men in military uniform were trying to arrest the politician.

The coup attempt comes amidst a crisis currently gripping the country’s ruling party over an election for the parliament’s leadership that was supposed to be held on Saturday 18 May 2024 but got postponed.

DRC President Félix Antoine Tshilombo Tshisekedi was reelected in December 2023 via a chaotic vote, with calls for a revote from the opposition over what they said was a lack of transparency.

He said he would not “hesitate to dissolve the National Assembly and send everyone to new elections if these bad practices persist.”

Following the coup attempt, the US Embassy in Congo issued a security alert on Sunday 19 May 2024, urging caution after “reports of gunfire.”

Footage, apparently from the area of the shootout, showed military trucks and heavily armed men parading deserted streets in the neighborhood as the army said the situation has “been brought under control”.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is actually believed to be the world's richest country, in of natural resources.

Most of Congo's raw mineral deposits are currently untapped and are estimated at about $24 trillion, including the world's largest coltan reserves and considerable amounts of cobalt.

Thus, it is no surprise if other countries have a hand in destabilizing the country, with the aim of gaining access to plunder its mineral resources.

However, in this specific instance of the coup attempt on 19May24, the immediate and remote actors are yet to be fully unravelled.

Consequently, no fingers have as yet been pointed in the direction of any specific country.
