There was a report yesterday that the NTA asked General Gowon to speak in Hausa. I'll quote it.

This is not true. What actually happened?

General Gowon visited President Tinubu and after meeting with the president, he spoke to journalists and said something interesting.

He said that a report had circulated that Ecowas asked him to give a press conference about the situation in the subregion but he refused. He said that the report was not true. He said that there was some miscommunication, but that he was going to do the press conference that evening. Here is a video of Gowon's visit to Tinubu and his statement after the visit.

The reason that General Gowon was asked to do the press conference is because he was one of the founding fathers of Ecowas.

General Gowon had the press conference at the Ecowas Headquarters and seated beside him was the president of the Ecowas Commission, Omar Touray.

The General read a letter that he wrote to heads of state in the subregion and he asked those that wanted to leave Ecowas to come back. He talked about their reasons for founding Ecowas, etc.

He then gave the letter to the president of the commission and asked him to give it to all the heads of state.

After giving the letter to Omar Touray, the MC asked General Gowon to translate it to Hausa. Hausa is the most widely spoken langauge in Niger Republic, one of the countries that wants to leave Ecowas. It is also spoken in Benin, Togo, Ghana and other countries in the region.

However, General Gowon said that he wasn't told that he would have to translate the letter to Hausa and that for 8 or 9 years he has only spoken English and that he can't how to speak it. Here is the full video.

It was the Ecowas MC that asked General Gowon to speak in Hausa, not the NTA.


Ecowas knows that Gowon used to speak Hausa, but they didn't know that he has stopped. Here is General Gowon giving an interview to BBC Hausa and he spoke in Hausa here:

Anyway, there would have been nothing strange or wrong if the NTA had asked to interview him in Hausa. Some people on that thread acted as if the NTA had just a single channel. The NTA has numerous channels, including language channels and Nigerian languages are also spoken on some of their state stations.

Broadcasters often do multiple interviews with a guest once they've gotten him. A guest could do an interview in English and Hausa at one sitting.

Mr Gowon, who was one of the founders of ECOWAS as Nigeria's military head of state in May 1975, expressed his concerns about recent developments in the regional body in an open letter.

A former Nigerian Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, has asked ECOWAS to lift sanctions imposed on Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso.

He said “all West African leaders” should “immediately consider the lifting of all sanctions that have been imposed on Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali and Niger.”

Mr Gowon, who was one of the founders of ECOWAS as Nigeria’s military head of state in May 1975, expressed his concerns about recent developments in the regional body in an open letter addressed to Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS Member States.

The letter dated 13 February was seen by TIMES on Wednesday.

Following recent coups in West Africa, ECOWAS imposed economic sanctions on countries that had been taken over by the military as a deterrent.

He said it saddens him to learn that ECOWAS is threatened with disunity following the announcement by Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger to withdraw from the subregional bloc.

The three countries announced their withdrawal from ECOWAS on grounds of inhumane and illegal sanctions and went ahead to form a confederation.

The impact, Mr Gowon noted. will have far-reaching implications for the ordinary citizens who have been the major beneficiaries of regional integration.

He also urged the three nations to rescind their decision to withdraw from the bloc. He urged all 15 member states to hold a summit to discuss the future of the community, regional security and stability, as well as the roles of the international community given the current geopolitical context.

“Therefore, on behalf of all the founding fathers of the Community and myself, I urge the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, including the leaders of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, to put aside their differences and reunite for the peace, stability and prosperity of our sub-region,” the letter read.

Mr Gowon noted that despite the shortcomings of the subregional bloc, ECOWAS has made several major accomplishments including trade liberalisation, the right of West Africans to live legitimately in any country within the community, as well as successful peacekeeping operations.

“ECOWAS is more than a coalition of States, it is a community established for the good of our peoples, based on shared history, culture and tradition. Neither my generation nor present or future generations will understand or forgive the breakup of our Community,” he said.

Stop being economical with the truth. Multiple channel or not you just confirmed that he was asked to speak in Hausa, stop misleading people with your usual use of so called facts to cover the truth we are not all ill informed on this forum. I don't speak Hausa anymore is a diplomatic way an Elder avoids trouble when he knows it's not right to do so. That is what Gowon did, he played smart

This is quite strange

Why are they trying to prevail upon him to speak a language he says he no longer has a solid grasp of? That's the thing about the media. They'll be happy if he goes ahead and makes a total blunder.

Just listen to yourself, the NTA that was doing the broadcast was on national broadcast not regional as you are trying to paint it,

Once NTA is on national broadcast it is best to maintain English, except they want to interprete to all Nigerian languages not only Igbo, Yoruba or Hausa..

I feel you saw nothing wrong with what Malami did on national broadcast when they arrested MNK, you watched this nation go down because of things like this and many more and you keep ing such because you see nothing wrong in it...

For the issue of ECOWAS, the general said he doesn't want to speak, and he was not told about it, is it by force?

Why did NTA cut the broadcast, you saw nothing wrong in the cutting of the broadcast....


For the general to refuse to speak Hausa signals something might be wrong somewhere not only that, for NTA to cut the broadcast also signals something might be wrong too...
