Though most people say it has to do with "introvertsm", i am of the opinion that it has to do mainly with inferiority complex.
Should we put the church setting aside, most backbenchers are likely to still exibit such character in other gatherings like birthday parties, weddings, international forums etc.
They are of the believe that the front row is reserved for special people (dignitries). So they avoid it like a plague cause, they think themselves less worthy.
