Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has flagged off the payment of N1bn as a gratuity to teachers and local government workers who retired in 2011.

Akeredolu, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Union Matters and Special Duties, Mr. Dare Aragbaiye, said the N1bn was sourced from the October allocation from the federation .

He said the payment of N1bn marked a gradual defrayment of the backlog of gratuity arrears for retirees of Local Government and Primary school teachers.

According to him, “another tranche would soon be paid within the first quarter of next year.

Some pensioners who retired in 2012 were paid, while those the government termed distressed benefitted from the N1bn payment.

The governor said that his istration has fully paid all outstanding salaries and pensions, including the allowances of all retirees left by the previous istration.

“We want to make sure pensioners in the state do not suffer anymore. We are making efforts to rid our communities of miscreants and criminals, as well as those who engage in cult-related activities in our dear state.

“The State Government is continually committing enormous resources to strengthening the Amotekun Corps in of equipment and human resources.

“This is in addition to the provision of funds and other logistical to other sister security agencies operating in Ondo State. Our government cannot tolerate a situation where our citizens cannot conduct their daily businesses in a safe environment.”

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon Takuro Amidu, said the payment of the gratuity was initiated by Governor Akeredolu by ensuring that some money was saved every month.

Amidu said that Governor Akeredolu was poised to take care of senior citizens.

Some of the pensioners said it was suicidal for them to survive 12 years without collecting their gratuities.

Many of them said that they would use a chunk of the money to pay accumulated debts.

One of them, Chief Ojo Samuel, said it was difficult for him to cope with life situations after he retired and his gratuity was not paid.

“We thank God we are alive to collect and enjoy our benefit.”

The chairman of pensioners in Ondo State, Johnson Osunyemi, said the payment of N1bn was a reassurance that the governor would do more for them.

Osunyemi said pensioners have not witnessed such a good gesture in the state.

When he was Hale and hearty, he didn't accomplish paying the backlog. Now He wants to win back the side of people in his almost vegetable health condition.

Governance must continue and that means the Deputy must be handed over to complete their campaign promises to the good people of Ondo state

But where is Akeredolu. How can we know it was him that released the money when we don't know where he is or even if he is alive.

He doesn't need the mandate since he is in his second term already.

He is out going

Politicians and their manipulations

If he was not under pressure to leave office, he won't release the fund because he can't be using allocation meant for the whole state to pay salary or pension of few alone.
Now that he needs the empathy of workers to remain in office, he has suddenly forgotten he is the governor of none workers too.

But he is still unable to fulfill his mandate given to him by the people due to the illness, is it honourable to resign or hand over to the deputy to complete what he started? It's just natural

That's from someone who withdrew 7.1bn from the state coffers in the name of contingency without appropriation by the state assembly and spent by Betty and Jide (his wife and son). This same Jide already bought a very major hotel in town at the cost of 2bn and proceeded to demolish it to ground level. That's apart from the illegal money he collects on monthly basis from providus bank as 10% of the state's IGR which he claims to be generating. He went ahead to collect 400m from zenith bank, the moment he discovered the government had some savings of 4bn domiciled at zenith bank since 2010. He went into the govt forest reserve and expelled the farmers doing their legitimate businesses and then started timber business therefrom. Where do we start from, if we are to open the yansh of these unrepentant thieves? Now they shared 1bn among some people who have worked for 35 years and retired into extreme poverty for upwards of 10 years and then, we no go hear word again. Aragbaye as Head of Service was also the PS Govt house and was the one coordinating the brazen malversation of public funds. As a retired Head of service and now an appointed Special Adviser on union matters, he is the de facto Head of service and still does the posting of Permanent Secretaries, doing all sorts of hatchet jobs for the governor but directly under the coordination of the governor's son. He constantly bullies all the civil servants and anyone that's not in the good books will be posted to "dry departments". That's how much docile Aketi has been and how he has turned governance to family affair. He should hand over to his deputy and practise what he had preached.

Retired teachers and local government workers earn peanuts in that state. So I think the 1Billion dollars will serve the purpose

Pensioners still earn 3k monthly, while LG workers maybe earning 15k monthly also
