Before accepting the job offer that company just sent
Do these 3 things

1. Find at least 2 former employee on LinkedIn, just search the company, you will see all their former and recent employees. Ask their former employee
Ask questions about their company culture
If they encourage work/life balance
If there are opportunities for growth in compensation and career
What they loved and hated about the company
And every other questions you need to ask

Ask two different employees , so you get balanced results

2. Go to nairaland, type the company on the search bar
If there are anything on the company, you will read it there

3. Go to Glassdoor:. You might be lucky to see a review from former employees.
The goal is to draw your conclusion and decide

My own advice
If the you get from all 3 sources are negative

My dear, don't go and think you will be treated differently

Your mental health will pay dearly for it

Exactly, just like Reliable Steel & Plastic Industries AKA RSP in Onitsha, Anambra State.

That company is a hell fire while the directors are the Devil, management are evil spirit.

Great Post, but the former employee part does not always work.

For instance, someone reached out to me through LinkedIn to ask about a particular place I worked, with a view to knowing certain things. I gave her a general answer of "It is like any other entity with its peculiarities".

Meanwhile, I won't recommend that place for anyone. However, I bet you don't expect me to start raising the issue of toxic environment and others with a stranger who is looking at working there.

Another thing to look out for is if the company has d that your particular role numerous times in the past.

If yes, It means the staff attrition rate is high. Na something dey pursue all of them from there. So, don't be too fast to do THANKSGIVING at your church.

Do your research well before jumping from frying pan to fire.

you think if a stranger calls me out of the blue to ask questions about my former employer, i will answer him? especially as a nigerian? when i dont know if it is really some sort of scammer or something more sinister?

2. Go to nairaland, type the company on the search bar

wrong. i know of a company with a very very shitty working environment which did not feature here in any way

the gossip in the industry does not reach nairaland. maybe the nairaland of 10 years ago - but nairaland of today is not really a place where people talk career stuff

3. Go to Glassdoor:. You might be lucky to see a review from former employees.

this is a western thing, imho. maybe not even there. a negative review of your former company can backfire on you

My own advice
If the you get from all 3 sources are negative

My dear, don't go and think you will be treated differently

this is actually where you are also wrong. some people can fit right into the company culture. its Emotional intelligence

most importantly,
go through the contract documents very well.
if possible, get a lawyer to help you understand them.
