He's right. Some of the OP's points are very valid. In truth, it isn't advisable for an average guy to pitch tent with a broke girl. Their relationship might fail, due to so many factors. And some of these factors might include, the inability to meet needs, parental issues, outlook, arbitrary control etc.

If a guy has enough, he can date a broke girl, it isn't an issue. Even if the broke girl do not love him, she will be pressured to stay in the relationship, because of the sustainability. And with time, the love might grow.

Contrary to the above, if an average guy gets into relationship with an average lady, the union will be enviable, because something unique about each half may have attracted them to become one. Since, neither is richer, and money not being the factor that bond them, the union is bound to succeed. And as a result, the love will continue to blossom, because of this uniqueness they both found on each other.
