He probably doesn't have a home. The prison is free home and the bread is free food which he'd always get periodically. Being free would mean he may not be able to cater for himself and considering the picture, that man is certainly poor.

This explains alot of things, lets take for an example.

The condition of our country nigeria... instead our leaders should fight for the success{the key} of the whole country he chooses to fight for him self alone{the bread}.

He believes in immediate gratification and free food rather than key of freedom that will grant him unhindered access to new leash of life.Most of Nigerian electorate could be likened to this,they run after moneybag politicians for immediate bread and sell off their future,they exchange their glorious future for bread and later they begin to cry in horrible pain.Anyone who needs and desires a glorious future must have power of delayed gratification.

The entire mindset of the prisoner is to eat first. There is a possibility that he didn't even notice the key. However, let's say he noticed the key, before that move, all he wants first is to eat, get strength to unlock the gate and move.

Even if he goes for the key first, there are hurdles (police and sentries scattered around) to face prior to escape that will require lots of strength.

It's reflects the mind of nigeria voters, they will rather vote for urgent 2k than vote a credible candidate.

He choose the bread because he believes he is okay with his current condition which in our real life mean comfort zone , most of us sees the key to our freedom but we fail to us it..

The key can only open the door from outside. Having the key is useless for him.

That is Nigeria for you. We vote and are on the look out for the candidate that will give us bread but not the key to our freedom.

The fact the stick can pick both the bread and the key means there’s still time to achieve a lot. He only need strength to initiate it. The bread gives strength. Probably he was lacking in strength, hence the more reason he had to actualize first the necessity to gain more strength. Then after he must have gained it, then he goes for the key. But also, there might be some other obstacles even when he opens the first gate, which is why he just wanted to eat the bread first before thinking of opening the door.

This is usually the scenario in life. Another perspective though.
