SAD SAD SAD

Armed robbers have shot dead a retired Colonel of the Nigerian Army. The victim, identified as Chief Lawrence Balogun, 57, the Apase of Ojokoroland in Ijaiye, Lagos, was an indigene of Ilesa, Osun State. Police sources revealed that Chief Balogun was at his Merciful Guest House on No. 101, Lambe Bus Stop Jankara, Ijaiye, near the palace of the Oba of Ojokoro, alongside his wife and two children, when the six robbers stormed the place at about 11:00 p.m. on Saturday night.

The robbers reportedly shot sporadically and forced the gate of the guest house open.

Sensing danger, the colonel hurriedly took his wife and two children to a safe area and later engaged the robbers in a gun battle during which he was hit in the abdomen. After the robbers escaped, he was rushed to a nearby hospital by Oba Rilwanu Oluwalambe Taiwo of Ojokoro, where the doctors on duty treated him.

Due to his critical condition, he was later referred him to Ikeja General Hospital where he died yesterday morning.

The late colonel’s first son, Olusola David, a final year student of ancy at the Lagos State Polytechnic, lamented in tears: “I really do not know why they killed my father. He did not engage in shady deals with anybody. He was a plain and generous father whose mother is still alive.

“Those who murdered him have murdered sleep and they will sleep no more.

“I implore the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro, and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Muhammed Abubakar, to fish out the culprits.”

Sympathisers were seen crying profusely yesterday at his residence on Amosun street, Jankara, Ijaiye, Lagos.

The deceased left behind seven children and two wives.

The incident has been reported at Ijaiye Police Station.

Mamajama(m): 9:38pm On Jul 23, 2007
Nigerian police has nothing to do with this mess, if you pay your tax and the police is well funded and equipped we wont have this kind of activity in the 1st place. people and the government need to stop the blaming game.

Is the "breaking news" the fact that he is colonel or that he was shot by armed robbers
naijaway(m): 10:58pm On Jul 23, 2007
Our police needs to have more technology then we can begin implementing a higher pay. There's no need increasing their pay and then letting their progress be to decide if someone is an armed robber or not. They lack everything from better guns to good training to respect to forensics to dedication to infiltration techniques to containment to radios and even basic education not to talk about higher education.
