The Soviets did not go into Afghanistan to make sure women had equal rights with men. They went there to make sure that their allies in power were not removed by the conservatives, and that Soviet interests in the region were not threatened by the USA.

If Afghan women want equal rights and justice, they have to fight for equal rights and justice. And it is going to take them time, and a lot of money and a lot of lives. Yes, lives. Even their foreign allies that were encouraging them...women rights took centuries to take hold in Europe, and the USA. And the women there achieved it without having foreign troops on their country's soil. Their police did not back them even (at one time in most European countries it was legal for a man to rape his wife...it took decades of women fighting to make that illegal)

Or were they expecting the US to turn Afghanistan into a colony of the USA...with American district commisioners in every nook and cranny to enforce human rights. In a country with limited resources?
