15 year rail cars aren't so bad. They should have another 10-15 years life in them, and he (or more accurately, the concessionaire, I guess) can get them pretty cheap.

Seems like a pretty good way to go about it.

“You need a lot of patience,” says Peter Kieran, president and chief executive officer of CS. “We almost always get paid, but it’s often several years later. It’s not something a Canadian bank would easily understand.”

This is Africa

This has been highly controversial in places such as Mombasa, the biggest Kenyan port, where hundreds of dock workers have clashed with police in protests against the privatization this year. In Lagos, the transit project (and an accompanying expressway) has required the relocation of thousands of impoverished residents.

But the transit project could make a huge difference to the lives of ordinary Nigerians. The traffic chaos in Lagos is legendary. Commuters routinely wake up at 5 am for three-hour journeys to work, often using a series of different danfos – also known as “flying coffins” – the rickety mini-buses that are notoriously unsafe and reckless. People swap stories of six-hour traffic jams where motorists abandon their vehicles to drink tea at nearby shops.

The Lagos transport authority says the new transit system will be the “elixir” to solve this congestion. It estimates that 1.6 million engers will ride daily on the first two transit lines when they are completed. The trains will travel at speeds up to 100 kilometres an hour, running at five-minute intervals at peak hours.

I haven't read the whole thread, but I hope its not that Fashola wants to buy the TTC trains off the city of Toronto? Those train are dead. They are almsot always late in the mornings. TTC is planning to get rid of them and they have show cased the new trains.

Why do we always like to buy aloku?

One last thing, everyone I know here hates riding the TTC. Those trains are crap, look like crap and feel like crap.

They are about 20 years old if not more. City of Toronto and Province of Ontario have contracted Bombadier to get new trains.

They dont have lots of seats. The cars are not linked together and they are so ricketty, its unbelievable, They better reupholster them before Lagos gets them. Its winds me up just thinking of it!.
Orikinla(m): 4:07pm On Sep 27, 2011
The trains are already on the way to Lagos.

The first of hundreds of Toronto subway cars that will furnish a new surface rail line in Lagos, Nigeria, has left Canada for the last time, and is now en route to Africa's largest city.

because we don't have the money to buy shiny new ones, Aloku can be refurbished and made to go the distant if well maintained
people still send used cars and laptops home and Airlines use pre-owned planes too
Good thing you didn't mention anything to do with safety, so they are safe, their being late is largely due to weather, tracks and driver themselves not the cars

We cant afford to be paying for trains for our lifetime when we can get the job done for half the price (half the time to deliver)

The first of hundreds of Toronto subway cars that will furnish a new surface rail line in Lagos has left Canada. They are due shortly in Africa’s fastest growing megacity.

An indigenous company, Eko Rail, has concluded plans to purchase 255 of the Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC) best-equipped subway cars for use in a long-anticipated Lagos Blue Line mass transit system. The TTC is in the process of purchasing larger “Rocket” trains to increase enger capacity on their lines.

As the electric-powered cars become surplus and are pulled offline in Toronto, they will be individually trucked to the United States for rebuilding by a team of world-class rail engineers. The cars will also undergo track-width (or “gauge”) conversion and interior refurbishment before being shipped to Lagos.

The trains have been inspected by the Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, who endorsed the plan to purchase them following his official visit to Toronto in May 2011.

“The shipment of the first car is an important step in Eko Rail’s efforts to the Governor’s transformation agenda for the city,” said David Potter, Eko Rail’s Chief Engineer.

“Ultimately, the Blue Line, with this modernised fleet, will bring massive benefits to Lagos’ economic development and improve Lagosians’ quality of life.”

I dunno. I don't know of any reputable Nigerian train companies. I guess Fashola could have encouraged someone to float one.

But do you really want to put the security and safety of those who will use the trains on somebody new? undecided

While patronizing African businesses is a good thing, security and expertise comes first. After all, Fashola's constituency is not the African businessman, but the citizens of Lagos.

Where are the trains?
Or did this turn out as another PR charade?

Yet, some desperadoes are doing their best to downplay GEJ's legit and commendable trains. Shameless people.
History will judge you.

Go to Iganmu and see the extent of the project.

A bridge across the Lagoon is the next point of call.

Don't compare the light rail project to GEJ's rails that only require laying tracks on granite mounds or refurbishing existing tracks.

The light rail has large concrete footings for several kilometers, its a sight to behold.

You will never get any trains from them, yet they always write GEJ's trains off but they gave us nothing.

I have always said it, Fashola is a fraud; his SANship is also a fraud. I will go on TV someday to expose the mega-fraud dubbed a performer.

Haaaa! That's 4 years ago? If I told you the power issues will be solved that you should be patient just 1 year after privatisation, what would be your response?

You are giving excuses for a train that was inspected 4 years ago and no one has heard of it.
Can you give excuses if it was Jonathan?

I am not bad belle. I love Fashiola alone. If Tinubu was not with him, that guy would have done wonders in Lagos but Tinubu is the problem. So not bad belle.
By the way, why are you showing me the interior of a train that is yet to to come to Nigeria? Do not change the topic. When it arrives, we will compare. you cannot compare a bird that is still flying around in the bush with the one a in a cage tongue

Like anonimi said, I hope this wont be another case of bad business decision wink

Seun, please front page
