First and foremost I am a 2.2 graduate. But from what I have seen so far, I have come to discover that job adverts specifically give preference to first class and 2.1 graduates and very few give room for 2.2 applicants. And I am yet to see any job specification that includes graduates of third class degree.

Now someone with a third class degree can only do masters after completion of a postgraduate diploma. However, job ments for lecturing positions still lay emphasis on minimum of 2.2 for lecturing positions. So a third class degree applicant who has masters and PhD still doesn't stand a chance as compared to first and 2.1 or 2.2 applicants.

So my question is, what is the way forward for third class graduates, should they abandon the degree and enrol for another first degree? Or universities should abolish the award of third class degrees to graduates.

In my own opinion, students who have poor grades that will eventually earn them a third class degree should be given some form of remedial programmes for a year or two which will attract additional fees so they can have opportunity to boost their grades and at least earn a 2.2 upon graduation. Just my opinion!

My cousin a third class graduate is a scholar now and teaches a Nigerian language in an American University....


Infact he was employed from Nigeria here....

Keep improving yourself. Maybe add a skill too it , get certification like cipm,ican, etc. Then target advert without specification and most importantly. Leverage connection. Referrals and who you know that knows somebody in position then be on good integrity and open too learning.. Cheers

The best advice I would give to any 3rd class graduate is to enrol for another bachelor's degree immediately after graduation, even if it's an online program and try to achieve at least a 2nd class upper. At least the person would start from 200 or 300 level via direct entry considering the previous qualification.

Nobody wants to hire 3rd class graduates cos the bar is too low when the market is so competitive. There are more graduates than job offers and definitely the law of demand and supply will apply...

The 3rd class degree would be a complementary qualification while you have another one to show your better grade. Then you can pursue a master's degree afterwards... That's the smartest thing.

Nobody is looking for job with grade nowadays, create one for yourself... Who school help

whether 1.1, 2.1 or 2.2 nothing is guaranteed in this Nigeria.... Except by divine intervention. My advice is just make sure you have plan B( as in lucrative skill) so you don't get frustrated in this country.

The only thing you can do with a third class or any class in Nigeria is to have connection .Omo without connection u are nobody.


If u dont av connection, pray 4 divine intervention and learn a skill or go for pgd

It's not by class of degree in this present day, infact it has never been.
There are "Third class" and even "" graduates working in multinationals and top indigenous companies, how did they manage to get in? 1) Luck/Favour 2) Strong Network/Connection (like 5G type) 3) Professional qualification/ Self improvement 4) Fraternity (or secret cult).

Likewise you see many top graduates with good grades still searching for jobs, some working in banks and other fields totally different from their field of study and some still hanging on to hope.

Disclaimer: Nobody is asking anyone to cult. Face your studies and with flying colours and everything will work in your favour against all odds.
Moral: To those who didn't make the top grades, never give up!

I am a third class degree holder. when I saw my final result, I went ahead to beg my course adviser to "please dash me one point so that I can be in the group of 2.2". But the word she gave me, made me to beat my chest that I will never give up.
She said to me, My dear, to be candid with you, you are a brilliant lady BUT the society we are now, do not require your certificate before getting a good job.
I took the words & plan for the future.
today, I'm a Civil Servant in one of the best state in Nigeria.

Get into IT. No one cares about your degree in the IT sector but what you can do. Check out IT jobs there's no preference for class of degrees but rather what you can do.
