Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Zainab Ahmed, the minister of finance, budget and national planning, have urged the board of the African Development Bank to ignore calls for an independent investigation of Akinwumi Adesina by the US.

Adesina, who is the president of the AfDB, was accused of favouritism and has been absolved of the allegations by the bank’s ethics committee.

In separate letters seen by TheCable, the duo urged Kaba Niale, chairman of the AfDB board of governors, to follow laid down processes to protect and preserve the bank.

“The call for an independent investigation of the president is outside of the laid down rules, procedures and governing system of the bank and its articles as it relates to the code of conduct on ethics for the president,” Ahmed wrote.

In his letter, Obasanjo wrote: “Unfortunately, the US government, through the US treasury secretary, has written a public letter (that was also distributed to the press globally) to disagree with the conclusions of the ethics committee of the board of directors and the chairman of the board of governors of the bank.
Instead of accepting the exoneration of the president of the bank, they called for an independent investigation.

“This is outside of the rules, laws, procedures and governance systems of the bank. The US treasury secretary disparaged the bank and ridiculed the entire governance system of the bank which has been in place since 1964.

“This is unprecedented in the annals of the African Development Bank Group. If we do not rise up and defend the African Development Bank, this might mean the end of the African Development Bank, as its governance will be hijacked away from Africa.”

Obasanjo also advised that it is “critical” to emphasise the need for the AfDB to remain an “African-focused development bank rather than one which serves interests outside Africa.

This is a fierce battle for the SOUL of AfDB. I hope Africa wins.

Finally the issues of visionless leadership, corruption and poor management of countries' economies have come to haunt Africa. We don't even fully own our bank!

Believe me, if Akinwumi Adesina will survive this storm, two things will help:

1. His personal relationship and rapport with leaders of , , Japan and Canada well as most African countries. Even after serving under Jonathan, he maintained good relationship with Pres Buhari. He has this intellectual charm. Part of his offence is that he has virtually secured 2nd term unopposed without recourse to almighty United States.

2. The hatred which EU has for the proud narcissistic Donald Trump, the President of United States may help Adesina's case. Nigeria should exploit this to protect our candidate and image as a country.

All these letters will put diplomatic pressure on AfDB Board of Directors but if US garners the of key non-African shareholders, Akinwumi Adesina will go because Francophone countries will always toe the line drawn by thereby deflating Africa's resistance. In addition, I don't trust South Africa to protect Nigeria's interest.

America will always try to bully everyone.

This is a welcome development. Africa must unite to stop the attempt by US to impose a stooge as president of the bank. Kudos to president Obasanjo and the FG of Nigeria for this promt intervention. Hopefully, ECOWAS and Africa Union will also take similar position as the FG of Nigeria. This is a fight for the development, progress, and freedom of Africa and not Adesina’s fight alone.

The bank’s internal procedures are clear, it is only the ethics committee that can investigate the president. The ethics committee probed him for three good months and found nothing, that should be the end of the matter. If the US want another investigation, there must be an amendment to the rules and regulations of the bank. Corruption cannot be fought through illegality. An independent investigation of the president is in violation of the banks rules, regulations and governance system.

What is all this noise about AfDB and the US investigating Adeshina. If the AFDB boss is free of any charge then there's absolutely nothing to be afraid of unless he's got skeleton in his cupboard.
Saying the US is trying to impose a stooge isnt necessary. Akinwumi Adeshina's innocence will be affirmed by US investigators or independent investigation report at the end of the day.He also stand to gain more trust within AfDB,Africa and all concern
