IgbereTV reports that Governor El-Rufa’i of Kaduna State has stated that all the 218 Almajirai children who were repatraited to Kaduna and now tested free of COVID-19, would be compulsorily enrolled in primary school.

He said, “Every child in Kaduna has equal opportunity and access to 12 years of Free and Compulsory Education in our public schools."

Governor El-Rufa’i said on his Facebook that he was “pleased to see our Almajiri children the batch of 218 from Kano, Nassarawa, Plateau & Gombe States looking well & free of Covid 19.”

“With the of @UNICEF_Nigeria, AMA Foundation, other NGOs & philanthropists, they are being restored full human rights as children, dignity & hope! Every child in Kaduna has equal opportunity and access to 12 years of Free and Compulsory Education in our public schools.”

The governor disclosed that the Commissioner of Human Services and Social Development, Mrs Hafsat Baba and her team will return the Almajirai to their parents in collaboration with Local Government Chairmen and Traditional Rulers.

“All the children are to be compulsorily enrolled in the primary school nearest to them so they have modern education and life skills in the morning, and continue their Quranic or Islamic education in the afternoon and over the weekend. That is how many of us got our education.

“That is what the Nothern States’ Governors’ Forum decided. These children may the future of Northern Nigeria,” he said.

How sustainable is this, it is like pouring water inside basket, you still have the high rate of production of children that are still been sent out to study only islamic studies then the government is spending billions to take them off the streets, when a single law that makes every parent responsible for the children they give birth to will end this.

I just keep wondering what the north is expecting in the next 10 - 20 years to come if as today there are over 13 million out of school children studying just islamic studies, the question I ask is do these over 13 million and counting children all are going to become islamic clerics, I mean think of over 13 million human beings who are studying nothing other than islam to become what in future, not doctors, not engineers e.t.c, over 13 million and still counting, look what we are seeing today in the north( terrorism and all) is as a result of what they have been doing for decades when their population was lesser now imagine now that their population has skyrocketed without any adjustment to improve on the system that has brought them to this level, I shake my head each time I think about the north, If I say what I wish for Nigeria now, one mod will delete my comment...

the only way an Almajiri abandoned once by their parent to fend for themselves could get education, is if the government lock them up in a bootcamp style boarding house

As way back as 60 years ago, my mum told me, Baptist Nursery and Primary Schools in kano give out foods, books and other incentives to lure kids to school and most bantantly refuse and their parents fighting the missionary, many years later those kids still ended up in the Police and Army

Without Forcefull enforcement of a law banning almajiri, this is also a waste of time, like the Almajiri Schools started by Jonathan, or Buhari/ Osinbajo's School feeding Program aimed at luring kids back to school
