Y are you people naturally scared of competition ...this is why most people hate igbos ...they claim igbos spoil markets ...but competition brings innovation and gives the customer best service

I wish to start same business there because I've gotten enough customers but I'll their union where as the law the union is dishing out is not favourable to me. There's no good reasons for their law.. the law is only favourable to the leaders. If I'm to sell clothes in that same market I'll also a union. Every business has it's union. I'm not trying to do this to hurt my mum but to break free from these bondage called law
Get a shop near the market and sale ...simple

you must be a Yoruba. Always afraid of competition. Those laws over there are meaningless and it's only Yorubas that initiate petit laws into petit business due to fear of competition

Look for another source to buy from and start selling online.

My post might be lengthy but I'll try my best to be brief but please read to the end.

I'm in my early twenties (20's) and currently a student in one of the prestigious university in Nigeria.

Before I got ission, I usually help my mum to sell onions in Ajegunle market aka boundary market in Lagos State.

Ever since schools were shut down due to the pandemic I've been scared of helping my mum because of the despicable rules or laws guiding the business which i might not be able to keep to it thereby putting my mum in trouble and that's the only means of survival for me and mum for now.

My mum belongs to a group of people that sells same product and they are usually referred to as Union and the leaders are the one dishing out those annoying laws.

Examples of such laws are:

1. You don't buy more than the quantity of goods apportioned to you else you will be fined and suspended from selling but the so called leaders go contrary to these laws

2. They tell you when to buy goods i.e before buying new goods, you sell your old goods for 7days not minding if the quantity apportioned to you is enough or not. My self as a case study, we were apportioned 3 bags of onions and I sell 3 bags in 3 days so me and my mum would stay at home for 4days before going to buy new goods.

3. They tell you when to start selling which is 10:00am everyday excluding Sunday and this law was before the pandemic

4. They tell you how to sell i.e the size of onions you are to sell for a particular amount as if they borrowed you money or they are the one giving you money always to buy goods.

And many more of these unimaginable laws. Right now I confused! I don't know the best way to go about this and I really do wish to start selling because I'm broke and I've so many responsibilities to care for financially.

I need legal help, advice on how to go about this until I get something else to do or probably a work or a different business.

The reason for going into business is to make profit and save for rainy days but the reverse seems to be the case here.

Please help me move to front page to get more reviews in regard to this

The rules seem like we're in a socialist system. Nigeria is a capitalist country. The rules must not be by force. It's the rules of the union and you must not be a member of the union. There's freedom of association. If the rules are not to the benefit of your business u should leave the union

Start your own onion business.
Side by side with your mum and boom....

The street is strict

Blend in into the system. Be vocal in ing the excos in whatever they are doing whether good or bad. Then you will become popular among them. In the next election, they will want to bring you in because they will feel you are one there side. Once you are in as an exco, you can then fight to modify or break the bad the system.

Such nonsense can never happen in an Igbo or Hausa market. These other people form unions in virtually every thing. Nonsense.

You can sale from home too, make deliveries to homies and shops around you. Create some buzz online and see your responds. Even hotels and restaurants need people that can supply them vegetables and don’t limit yourself to just onions.

Spread out, don't use one market only. Try selling in other markets too.

That’s the only major market at Ajegunle.

Boundary Market and Suru- Alaba Market

My dear, maybe you can also add another item, like tomatoes, or vegetables, or dried fish, I think you are amazing and can do more, because you have the tendency, but do not break any rules, although some rules are not relevant.

Go and be innovative.

This so called market unions are very strong and stupid sets of authoritative people

I guess your mum knows all these rules before going into the same trade

Unless the rules came out of this COVID-19, if yes then she is not the only one affected

I know boundary market too well. My advise is that you leave the market environment, to another site, where such rules don't apply. This set of rules apply to almost all the sectors in the market, eg: Tomatoes, pepper, fish, oil. etc. But there are those who sell those things outside the market environment, far from their control.

This same nonsense was brought by some unions to my dad decades ago. The union excos met their match when the police officers sternly instructed them to leave Dad's business alone, as he runs a ed company and cannot be compelled to any union.

Dear Op,
Find a means to your business or your Mom's business. Please, don't just as onions seller, make it comprehensive: vegetables, seasonings, soup ingredients, etc.
Then, take your hustle online. Concentrate on your locale, so that deliveries won't be too much of a hassle. Be safety conscious too.
Use your education to help yourself and your family. Forget the unions. Best wishes
