Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Wednesday directed the sack of a government driver that unilaterally attended to an unkempt person who was evacuated with a COVID-19 ambulance in Ilorin.

He also directed the issuance of queries to top officials of the state ministry of health for failing to act with necessary caution and expertise in the handling of the incident that was recorded in a video footage that has since gone viral.

“The Governor totally condemns the shoddy handling of the gentleman who was clearly going through a hard time," Rafiu Ajakaye, chief press secretary to the Governor, said in a statement on Wednesday.

“He has directed that the driver be fired immediately. As the investigation revealed, the driver failed to heed clear directive not to take any action until the Rapid Response Team (RRT) arrives the scene. He evacuated the gentleman with the help of of the public without waiting for the arrival of the RRT."

The Governor further directed that of the RRT be queried, while other steps are being taken to ensure this incident does not repeat itself. Involving just anybody in the evacuation of a suspected case, as was seen in the footage, was a clear and dangerous violation of COVID-19 safety protocols. The government equally finds it quite distasteful and unacceptable that the driver, who had long been involved in such operations, made unethical comments to somebody in distress.

"That incident was avoidable, and we sincerely apologise to the gentleman and to the people of Kwara State for the embarrassing development. We assure them this will not happen again."

Driver doing the right thing in a wrong way undecided . But I think the governor could have sent him to the isolation center for quarantine and later warn him while he continues with his job. Opinion though...

The governor did what he is supposed to do. Nothing can be compared with life. Meanwhile, I am very sure that you want to invest in plots of land at Ibeju Lekki. Click on the links on my signature to know how you will go about it.

He fired the driver so that he can go and infect others instead of placing him under isolation. Kudos for a job poorly done

That's how he lost his job, who made the video ? angry

He didn't act well but I think the decision is rather harsh..

I also think he had been carrying people alone in the past, hence his action.. It's just that this particular one made it to the media..

Nah... lives are at stake. We gotta be objective here.

He messed up and was unfortunate to be captured on video embarrassing the Government....

Someone has to be the sacrificial lamb / scapegoat.

PS - the sad part of the story is that he or a friend of his probably took the video to show off.

This should be a lesson to people who quickly take to social media. It is often evidence to nail yourself. Happened to the security guy in Ekiti who took that video of a man who ejected his son in mockery.

Political showmanship at d expense of the poor driver.
I don't think they'll provide d driver with the correct PPE and he'll refuse to use it.

Now they made the driver the scape goat.

How did a driver know where to go?

Who gave him information?

Where is he taking the patient to?

The other peeps are not on PPEs too and do not look like health care officials

And is that converted danfo what Kwara is using as an Ambulance?

There are a million things wrong with that video not the action of the driver alone.

I actually thought they used that van to pick a mentally unstable man, not a covid-19 patient.

I was so wrong. Naija!!!

I am sure the driver's superiors pushed him out on this errand while lazily gossiping in their offices as is typical of most public workers. They should be the ones receiving the big hammer

Watching this clip was embarrassing to say the least.
That's a real case that they handled like that?? shocked

No one should be suprised when cases surge in kwara ... the driver is not completely to blame though.

Na the rrt dem suppose query... angry why where they late that the driver had to source for unprofessional assistance?
Even the ambulance driver should hv been given ppe tlk less of the people to lift the patient into the ambulance.

How do people reason in dis country...
jidxin(m): 6:22am On May 14, 2020
It's a pity. The driver should not be sacked but whosoever is supervising it. This country is bleeped up. The driver obviously doesn't know wat he was dealing with and WHERE THE Bleep IS THE PARAMEDICS. An ambulance shouldn't work without a paramedic...

Why blame the driver? Really?
Why didn't the institute give him the PPE,no be wetin Dem give am him go use? He can't possibly have PPE and avoid putting it on,thus risking his life. He ain't the only one,so the issue is from his ogas, the institute.
Yeye country.
