Attempt To Smuggle 24 Women Into Abia From Akwa Ibom Foiled By Vigilante by Nobody: 10:52pm On Apr 24, 2020
Men of the Abia State Vigilante Service on Friday arrested no fewer than twenty four market women parked in a container truck, at the Ekwereazu Ngwa boundary between Abia and Akwa Ibom states. Ekwereazu is a border community in Obingwa LGA, ABN TV reports.

The women who came from Akwa Ibom state and were on their way to Aba, were arrested with the truck driver and two of his conductors for violating the border closure and lockdown order by the State Government.

The Commissioner for Home land security, Prince Dan Okoli who was at the scene noted that the situation where people are smuggled into the State poses a great threat to the efforts by the State government to contain the spread of Covid-19.

According to a statement signed by Onyebuchi Ememanka, the Chief Press Secretary to Abia State governor, the driver of the truck, Moses Asuquo from Akwa Ibom State claimed he was going to Aba to purchase stock fish but decided to assist the stranded women.

Recall that recently, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu charged the Local Government Transition Committee Chairmen in all the border communities in the State to tighten up their borders or face sanctions.

The women were sent back to Akwa Ibom from that spot while the driver and his conductors were arrested and handed over to the State Police Command for further action. The vehicle was also impounded.

I agree that they were wrong for doing that at this time but I am trying to be empathetic here. For those who make their living through daily sales, the lock down has been quite challenging. Moreover this ugly trend of brandishing photos of the accused but not proven guilty, on the internet just has to stop.

This is total nonsense. Government is insensitive and heartless. These are poor market women on their way to buy supplies they sell at their home markets for the upkeep of their children. Perhaps their children will go hungry this week because of this.

Tell government to stop victimizing and intimidating women. Do we want to see little babies start dying from hunger? These women need to go to market and trade so they can feed their babies abeg. Which kind nonsense is this?

Tell that driver...and any driver for that matter... to stop packing people in that type of truck, they can all suffocate to death because of poor ventilation and depleted oxygen.

Now you have the women, next is to ask them their mission.
Help them achieve their mission if its legit, if not safe isolate them for 14 days before sending them to their respective home if covid 19 negative.

Some can't just survive unless they go out. They depend on daily income.

But only when there's life, there's hope.
