Sokoto State government is mulling the adoption of the Indonesian Pondok Pesantren Madrasah system of education as an alternative to the existing Almajiri system in the state.

The state governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal stated this Sunday when he received the Indonesian ambassador to Nigeria, AVM Usra Hendra Harahap during the latter’s courtesy visit to the Government House, Sokoto.

The Pondok system employs mosques and langgar (a blend of Islamic and Western education) as well as adopt existing local institutions such as surau (Islamic assembly buildings) and pesantren (a Muslim school in Indonesia operated by religious leaders) as the places for Muslims to study Islam.

Tambuwal explained that for the state government to have a homegrown system similar to the Pondok, it will consult the Sultan of Sokoto and other stakeholders in order for them to have a buy-in.

The state government, the governor noted, is not in a hurry to ban the Almajiri system as some states had done without providing an alternative.

He expressed confidence that the Pondok system once adopted “can serve as an alternative to the Almajiri system.”

“We are intensifying efforts to ensure that the Pondok system is adopted before banning the Almajiri system. This is because we are desirous of ensuring that Sokoto children are exposed to both Western and Islamic education,” Tambuwal emphasized.

While expressing gratitude to the Indonesian government for taking interest in Sokoto, he assured the Ambassador that his visit will deepen Indonesia’s relationship not only with the state but also the country, with which it shares religious, cultural and climatic similarities.

He said that the state was already pursuing further ties with Indonesia in the areas of healthcare, economy, Islamic models of business and economic enterprises.

Gov. Tambuwal further applauded the Indonesian government for agreeing to send experts to share knowledge with the state on economic inclusion derivatives.

Earlier, Amb. Harahap had explained that his visit to the state “is to increase the bilateral relations and cooperation between Indonesia and Nigeria, especially in Sokoto state in the areas of education and agriculture, including animal husbandry.”

Giving reasons why it is feasible for the state to have a good relationship with his country, Amb. Harahap said his country will “be glad to share its best practices and most advanced scientific knowledge” with the state “to boost animal production.”

Any model adopted without proper & consistent effort will definitely fail in Nigeria. If the present Governor adopts the model & the new one feels its not right then what’s the essence? This goes beyond model adoption..

No parent should decide that an infant should become an Islamic scholar or cleric by merely dumping him with one poor and illiterate koran-reciting old man with no clear curriculum or learning objectives to give him balanced intellectual development or natural talent nurturing.

Rather, every child should attend formal school and be equally exposed to the same dose of Islamic studies alongside other subjects. If eventually, a growing child shows special interest in serving Allah by being a cleric or scholar, such child should be isolated for further guided training.

So long it's coming from your state covers even though na Niger Delta money anyway.


Btw what is it with Islamic studies sef, not that it has any advancement to science/technology just rulings on how to maintain the 20AD years in 21st century

What is wrong with Northerners sef... is It laziness?, Quran has just 604 pages, it has being translated to virtually all languages yet they only want to waste the first ten years of their lives reciting only 604 pages even when they completely don't know the meaning of what they recite

at age ten, I have completely read and learnt from 6 English text books, 6 mathematics text books, brighter grammar, many story books like ada go to school ., don Quixote, Ijapa and yanibo, and while am home I learnt quran and at age ten I could recite not less than 4 verses of hand

Why should a complete human being who isn't retarded say it is only 604 pages he wants to recite for a decade, or he wants to follow cows about for the rest of his life?..

I mean I have read Quran, Bible, Torah , all the different books of Moses including his spell book 7th book of Moses, and I can confidently tell you that Quran is just the same as Old testament and Torah with same story and little modification, Quran even went further to dedicate a whole chapter and several pages to Virgin Maryam or Mary mother of Jesus
