Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State who had a chat with journalists shortly after he inaugurated the distribution of fertilizers, seedlings and agro-chemicals for Taraba farmers for the 2019 farming season, stated that any Nigerian Governor saying he can tackle insecurity is lying. Governor Darius Ishaku who gave his reason for saying any Governor saying he can tackle insecurity is lying, stated that only state police could adequately address the resurgence of insecurity in the country.

“If any governor tells you that he will do anything about insecurity, such a governor is lying. As governors we don’t have control over the police or the army and virtually there is nothing we can do about security. We have been calling for the establishment of state police, but nobody seems to consider our position, but state police remains the only viable option to contain insecurity across the country now.

“The constitution does not place the security architecture of the country in the hands of governors. I am praying myself for peace and I have also asked the people of the state to pray for peace in the state,” he said.

He is quite right.

All security forces are subject of the FG. For that reason, they have no power whatsoever other than to make condolence visits.

It is high time FG established state police.

We already have many militias in this country, from street gangs, to vigilantes, to cultists, to organized crime mafias, to militants, to terrorists. State police would be just another Governor's militia that will eventually be politicized and used to suppress opposition and oppress non-conforming citizens. State police will just be another 'Gestapo' rising. Most of our Governors already have power-drunk dictatorship tendencies, and they are just looking for foot soldiers to solidify their rule. State police is a very big NO. Nigeria is not civilized enough for it. State police is not a MUST before states can have good security. What are the governors doing with their inflated security votes money? These wayo governors sef grin

It's time state policing be given a serious attention in Nigeria. My fear is this violence mongers who wants to divide the country, very good avenue to see their ambitions through. Meanwhile state policing is one of the very few ways to tackle insecurity in the Nigeria states.

Ode, you can tackle Insecuirity by creating economic oppurtunity that would lead to meaningfull employment to the jobless youths instead of dancing shaku shaku with over $1million secuirity votes monthly.

with such secuirity votes he can convineintly start building agroprocessing factories at each local goverment

This is so true...we know that the best way to curb the herdsmen menace is not by building colony as the government is proposing, rather is by state policing.
I know the disadvantages are there considering police becoming a tool in the governors hand. But the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages here....Even in America this is the practice !!!!
But what do I even know sef.

These insecurities are largely caused by unemployment, the other day an undergraduate burnt his certificate, he has lost hope and indirectly developed a hardened mind to anything neccessary in making a living.

Mr Governor, mind what you are saying.
What has a beginning must surely have an end.
Thanks to Obj and Jona for the miserable lives and death they brought upon this nation. through Boko Haram, Kidnapping and Killings.
Posterity will judge them both!

Well, the governor was right and wrong at the same time. In Anambra, there are vigilante services. In Onelga Rivers State, the OSPAC security is very effective in checking crime in the area. They it were that smoked out the notorious Don Wanny and gang. These are the handiwork of visionary governors in conjunction with the respective state houses of assembly. They can at least gather intelligence and liaise with NPF and the Army to keep the peace. A Governor is the chief security officer of his state. If the police commissioner isn't cooperating with him, he has the right to order his/ her replacement. The Governors should not abdicate their duties under the guise of not being in control of the security apparatuses. I do not state police because it will certainly be abused by politicians to intimidate opponents. Police and funding should remain in the hands of the FG but the constitution can increase the powers of the governors over their state police commissioners especially in times of heightened insecurity. Nigeria is not yet ripe for state policing.

But you didn't answer what security votes are for.

Seems you forgot Governors are often referred to as "Chief Security Officers" of a State.

If he doesn't have control, what are the votes for ? Read again...slowly this time!
