Here is a list of the best 5 dog breeds you should consider guarding your home with. Whether you live in mushin , Benin, Portharcourt, oshodi or ajegunle, these breeds will make potential intruders think twice. ![]() NB: If you want the best from your dog, get a pure breed and not the cheap diluted ones you see around. 5. Rottweilers These are medium sized breeds and are very common in Nigeria. The Rottweiler ahas a natural tendency to assert dominance if not properly trained. They are medium barkers and would rather give a warning growl before attempting an attack. The best part of them is that they have a very very mean look that would send a stranger running for his life. Cost of maintenance isn't bad either. 24 Likes 1 Share |

4. French Mastiff Similar traits with rotts but are far bigger. They have the biggest heads in the canine world too. They only bark when they need too and are great with kids. This is my favorite breed tho. We owned one years ago before she died. There are many reputable breeders around Nigeria. 8 Likes 2 Shares |

3. Caucasian Shepherds Very popular among Nigerian homes. They can be very territorial and aggressive. They aren't good with kids either so if you consider keeping one, always be on the lookout for kids around. They are also very large and have a great tendency to bark compared to rotts and French mastiffs. They can bark at anything even flies and birds. If you don't like noise or you live in a serene environment, stay away from this breed. 9 Likes 1 Share |

2. Boarboels The breed originally bred to fight off lions and guard home and farms. These breeds are very large, muscular and intimidating. They bark when necessary and not unnecessarily. They are easy to train and maintain. If you get a boarboel to guard your compound, you have no worries. 26 Likes 4 Shares |

1. Doberman Pinscher What more can you ask for in a security dog? Athletic, mean looking, fast etc. They are good barkers as well and only bark when necessary. They are very territorial meaning your compound is theirs and will protect it and the occupants at all costs. To make matters worse, they have a very mean look. Just a stare from them will make you run for your dear life. They are arguably the most beautiful and elegant in the dog world. when we were kids, we commonly called them police dog L 44 Likes 6 Shares |

Nigerians Homes and you’re mentioning Doberman pinscher, you obviously didn’t make enough research’s, German shepherds should top the list followed closely by rotts then boerboels, and WTTF is French mastiff doing on the list ![]() ![]() 55 Likes 3 Shares |

14teenK: I thought thesame thing. I have seen more GSDs in Nigeria than all the dogs in this list, and i am not talking of the crossed breeds we see on Nairaland. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Nice dogs, if I had any of these...I'll keep them indoors, not train them to be violent

I think, the German Sheperd should be among your list, not downgraded to "honorable mention" . ![]() A good GSD has all the qualities you desire from a guard dog, most expecially the Working Line. 24 Likes 3 Shares |

Vianna: The pure breds are great with kids. There are even stories of them protecting kids from their parents during corporal punishment. So I don't know where you got your info from. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jzu7_bvTnfk 12 Likes 2 Shares |

German Shepherd Dog AKA Alsatian, AKA Police Dog should be banished from Nigeria for good My GSD Puppy is the most destructive Dog i have ever seen in my entire FULL Life. I can boldly the movie Child's Play=====Chucky. That's how bad my dog is It doesn't eat rice, beans, yam, egg, etc. It doesn't eat its own canned food, or its own dry food, It drinks only milk,I mean ONLY PEAK MILK and Golden Morn, i buy the 900g average size and it finishes in 4days Now, it destroys anything inside the house, from my PS4 Pad to the remote control, from all my socks to my boxers in the room I kept her out in a cage and it ate the wood while crying mostly at night and you have no option to bring it inside(and d destruction continues) She barks at will, she barks when happy, it barks when sad, it barks when hungry, infact if it wants to poopoo or fart it will bark, like seriously which dog barks at it's own mess ![]() She chases anything without fear, Including me the owner ( On one fateful night i was drunk) The yeye dog is only 2months, i wonder what will become of it when she's about 9month old NB: It has once attempted to swallow my car key and it peed directly inside the cup of my last liquor i was sipping at home around 11PM 69 Likes 5 Shares |
