Hello Car Gurus... Since I bought my corrolla 9ja used, I've noticed my temp guage doesnt reach the middle (Picture attached). I have conducted a Cold engine test on my thermostat. Cold engine test: I opened the hood and removed radiator cap, I started the engine and observed coolant action. Coolant didnt move until after like 2mins then coolant started swirling. I was told on google this means my Thermostat is fine. But I noticed the previous owner have byed the fan. The fan starts running on ignition & neva stops until I put off the engine. Could this be reason why my temp guage neva reach the mid point, despite having a working thermostat ![]()

mayor2013:Boss, can you give an estimate of how much it would cost to connect the fan back, my car's fan (a Naija used 2003 Camry) also runs directly. Thanks. |

NobleEngineer: In the Nigerian setting there is no smoke without a fire. Older cars tend to have overheating issues because of a wide range of environmental and maintenance factors. The cooling system is originally supposed to run on coolant, and not water. When water is used in a cooling system for a long time, the system gets contaminated and starts to corrode. Parts in the cooling system made from aluminum begin to wear off and the radiator gets blocked, rust is introduced and in a space of 1-2 years a perfectly functional foreign used car starts to overheat in nigeria. Now this same scenario would also occur if coolant is not replaced at the right intervals. For the record coolant should be drained every 100,000km or 66,000 miles. (Ignore the Americans they just working with warranty) failure to do so, same results would occur to the cooling system. Our Nigerian technicians response to overheating is suppression of the symptoms, which is to by the functioning of the fan, making it run steady and removing the Thermostat which ensures fluid flow from the radiator to the engine without a buildup of heat. some times car owners take their functional cars that did not have any overheating issues to the technician and the cooling system is modified. The belief system is that that is what is best for the engine in nigeria. As a rule, when clients come with fans running directly, I try and retrieve a history of when and how long ago the procedure was done. I Inspect pipe ts to see how far corroded the aluminum parts of the engine have gone, then based on the information I have, I write a long list of parts to be replaced, before corrective wiring and Thermostat installation can be done. please note: a rubber hose with high pressure water or coolant on a corroded aluminum fitting will leak at the t especially when the temp of the car hits 96-100deg Celsius this in turn will cause overheating. If a client is not ready to replace radiator and corroded parts (if any) and return to factory coolant (not Abro or total or any green winch) I will not take the job! And will advice he leaves his system the way it is. Now back to your last quetion. There is a part called the ambient temp sensor mounted in front of the condenser , right behind the front Grill, it is either disconnected or missing. Replace it and you will get the proper readings. play safe every one, better to have a running engine, than a dissatisfied client with a blown gasket. 7 Likes |

GAZZUZZ: Total Nigeria PLC give us a specification sheet for your coolant |

AutoElectNG:Did he just condemn total's coolant? |
AutoElectNG: 8:18am On Jul 08, 2018 |
weyreypey: Well...I have seen a lot of bad press about Total coolant especially the green one. All I said is that it would be good to see the specification sheet so we can justify the bad press or ignore the bad press. I haven't seen any as at the time of this post. That said...I found an article suggesting that the lifespan of the green coolant is 2 years and the lifespan of the other Total coolant (the pink one) is 5 years, which is equivalent to the OEM fluid in at least Honda and maybe Toyota (saying maybe because I have not cross-checked) Picture credits: http://thelioncommunity..com/2016/04/new-total-coolant-pink-colour-now.html The article also provides the information above comparing both types. All I found at the Total Eshop was the text below: Total Radiator coolant has been engineered in a way that this coolant's thermal conductivity and boiling point is very suitable for hot countries. It provides high temperature resistance for all types of petrol and diesel engines and long term protection for radiators and water pumps. The radiator coolant removes scales and offsets corrosion which is suitable for all light and heavy vehicles. Provides high temperature resistance Removes scale and offsets corrosion Superior performance in a great number of internal combustion engines Contains foam inhibiting and corrosion-inhibiting additives Not compatible with silicate formulation That said, from the packaging the new Total coolant appears to be a better product that the one colored green, and maybe that's why it is considered substandard

nwanneni: sadly it is not my job to educate you on how to maintain your vehicle. Open a thread on NL and wait for a response, my phone is my personal property and I choose whom to speak with when I choose to speak with. When you become a paying client then you can accuse me of damaging your engine. by the way I do not mercerdes in my workshop. 13 Likes |

I have a competent mechanic who does well, but this issue proved to be beyond his expertise, after I left his office, thesame issue broke out on the way and I thought i should seek a second opinion, who else but gazzuzz. Our conversation was thus;gazzuzz, how far(which is common btw Nigerian youths).I am experiencing...... nwaneni, I have never met this guy gazzuz but he is not what you paint him to be. he pocks my calls and when he doesn't I understand he may be busy. no one I know picks all his calls. I don't pick all of mine. I send him texts when he doesn't and he calls back or replies the text. I have never paid him a dime but he helps out when he can. we should all understand that people have a right to their privacy. no offence meant by my post but the number of beefs and bashings brewing in the cartalk section is unbecoming. 8 Likes |
