"The tenure of office of the President shall be a single term of six years," Soludo said. "There shall be five Vice Presidents. One from each of the six geopolitical zones.” A Nigerian economics professor and a former Governor and chairman of the board of directors of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Charles Chukwuma Soludo, on Monday called for a single term of six years for the country's presidents. He made this call at the Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, Anambra State, while speaking at the south east summit on restructuring Nigeria. He also suggested that the country should have five vice presidents, each representing a geopolitical zone. Pointing out that presidents should serve for a single term and the years of the term should be extended from four years to six years, Soludo said: “The tenure of office of the President shall be a single term of six years. "There shall be five Vice Presidents. One from each of the six geopolitical zones.” Soludo’s comments come as a reawakening of calls by notable Nigerians for the restructuring of the country. Also speaking at the summit was the President of the Ohaneze, John Nwodo, who called for equality in the affairs. The summit was attended by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu; former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana; Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano; Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, former APGA Chairman, Victor Umeh; Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and Niger Delta leader Edwin Clark, amongst others. It was earlier reported that the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) threatened to disrupt the summit on the grounds that Biafra is non-negotiable. The statement released by the IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, in Enugu tate threatening to disrupt the summit read in parts: “All we want is referendum not restructuring; we want Biafra not Nigeria. "We have buried too many people; we have lost too many souls; we are pained by the innocent people that are still languishing in illegal detention all over Nigeria and we are enraged by the betrayal of those we call socio-political leaders. Only the total restoration of Biafra will suffice; anything else is mere waste of time.” http://saharareporters.com/2018/05/21/nigeria-needs-five-vice-presidents-and-six-year-single-term-presidents-says-soludo 20 Likes 5 Shares |

Nigeria is not a bank. 6 vice presidents will further increase the cost of governance, as each one of them will have to have fully furnished offices, official cars and personal staff. And the current 4yr tenure is also good, so that whoever is not measuring up to standards can be voted out on time instead of having to endure 6 gruesome years. 258 Likes 21 Shares |

Hahaha, that is common sense. I doubt if that will work. The tussle will be terrible especially with a clueless president like Bubu

thesicilian: But Nigeria is not working. We need to do something differently for this country to work. Doing the same thing and expecting different results is simply madness. 120 Likes 7 Shares |

Soludo is a great Igbo. Igbos are known for being bags of ideas. Soludo, it seems has picked up the mantle of Ekwueme. If Soludo does not contest the presidency in 2023, whoever wins would be wise to consult this man on matters political and economic.

These people look at governance as place of settlement instead of service if not there is no way any sane person will ask for one term of 6 years and 5 vice presidents

LadyExcellency:Personally I think the problem is not the structure, but the people. The same structure that everyone is clamouring for to be changed, is working well all over the world. 33 Likes 1 Share |

SalamRushdie:Not to or condemn Soludos idea, but Cuba has 5 vice presidents. In any case, his suggestion remains what it is: food for thought. 16 Likes 1 Share |

Six vice-presidents is way too much. Imagine the political strife that will arise when they pit themselves against each other, against the president and against the governors. It will be bedlam. A better idea will be to have been two vice presidents like south Africa has, but even then, the president can team up with the vice from his region to dominate the other. The best solution then is one we arrive at by elimination: restructure the federation and devolve power from the center to the states. We keep coming back to this. There is no escape. The presidency itself is not the thing. What is important is control of resources and access to economic opportunity and justice. 26 Likes |

thesicilian:That's not even the problem. The major problem will arise when minorities are perpetually shut out from the Vice presidency of their various regions because only 3 geopolitical zones are ethnically homogenous. 13 Likes 1 Share |

I was first to suggest something like this. He suggests vice presidents but I suggested a board of presidents. I suggested that Nigeria shouldn't vote for a central president but vote for regional presidents. At the state level, you vote for two offices, gorvenor and vice gorvenor. The gorvenor will represent the state at the presidential board, while vice gorvenor runs day-to-day stuff. I felt also Nigeria should make use of the wisdom of traditional rulers. The most powerful traditional rulers will occupy a sort of lower house, with powers of ratification or something to this effect. Finaly, there should be a third tire of government, called people's house or chamber, occupied by union and student leaders. of the top house of government, the Board of presidents, will choose the chairman of the Board. This chairperson will be the nearest thing to a president, in the new system. I have a more thorough idea of this someplace. The upshot is that we shouldn't be afraid to thinker with the idea of democracy or government styles. 11 Likes 2 Shares |

These are the type of people that buhari has muscled and relegated to the shadows. Nigeria's present leadership is devoid of any form of intelligent progressive thinking. It is rather filled with hate, propaganda, witchhunting, tribalism and so many other horrible vices not a single positive thing for the country. God won't forgive us if we make this same mistake in the coming elections.

Ish... If I get you right, they need president from all geopolitical zones of the nation and they all rotate each year... Not just 5 vice presidents... At the end, one will say that the president focused on his own region during the whole six years. The president and five VP will sign for six years and they will all rotate presidency every year and last year will be for the last VP. If they can practice it in Europe, I bet we can do it here 5 Likes |

Hahahahahaha!!! "5 Vice Presidents"?? Hahahahahaha!!! I thought they said he is a 'professor'? This sounds like something my drinking buddy Lamba would say after his 8th bottle of 'hot legend". What exactly will be the duties of the '5 vice presidents'? ![]() 6 Likes 1 Share |

A single term of 6 years or even 8years for the president, I agree completely, but 5 Vice Presidents, I completely disagree. There will be too much confusions among them just like what we witnessed at NNPC a few months back. The embarrassing imbroglio between State Minister of Petroleum, Minister of Petroleum and NNPC GMD including NNPC MD. These are all quadruple of offices/functions and avoidable financial hemorrhage for the country, even when the act stipulates each functions (there are still high level of arrogance and power play among them). 2 or 5 Vice Presidents will experience nothing short of same development therefore rendering their functions useless to the people. Already the vice president is just an arm-chair executive and a ceremonial head. 2 Likes |

I don't really the single six year term for President, being Nigeria, the politicians would do little or nothing much for the country but accumulate since they only have only one term and the people can't really impeach a president easily if he messes up
