No matter how bad the idea is I will look for a straight road section, kill the engine and hang onto the steering for dear life. If the vehicle begins to slip I re-engage the engine to power the hydraulics. The speed should be down by then for one to think straight. The time spent in dialing emergency can be costly.

You lose hydraulic power. The brakes system stiffens and the road takes charge. Only the park brakes work and then they have to be applied sensibly if they are manual.

if fuel finish and engine off steering no dey lock! Shut down engine and locking ignition are different things. Check your Key hole you will see it is marked likely LOCK>OFF>ON>ACC>START.
It requires a very cool head under such pressure to do this delicately and succesfuly without locking his steering. Most cars could have gone into neutral by the way and allow to slowly come to a stop.
