Generally, Yes. I'm still perfecting my shaders, lightnings, and textures. But i'm actually done with this project.

Yes, I used Blender. And no, I didn't extrude the shelf's from the wall. I instead added a new cube and modeled it into the shelf. But you can equally extrude the faces from the plane wall. Anything goes.

You are kinda right. Though, That depends.
Mental ray s all Maya materials and is better integrated with Maya because they have come a long way.
The only downside that made me switch from MR to Arnold is the tender time... Like the contrast is unbelievably far apart. I rendered a scene in MR that took around 30 mins. I used Arnold to achieve a similar look with 10-12mins render time. And with naija nepa I had to get a renderer that does the job in less time possible so, I won't render one scene for 2 years.

But, MR is a very good renderer. The best I've used. And thinking about going back if I get frustrated one more time with Arnold

I'm trying to play around with VRay but, it appears to have the same limitation as Arnold as far as integration is concerned.

In of interior renders however, it's a different story. Arnold is relatively slow when there are too many lights in the scene compared to MR.

So it's not that easy to say which is better than which, they all have advantage and dis. One just needs to find what one does more and chose the renderer that suits that job or have both and use them for what they do best (shrugs). Ain't nothing wrong.
