Yakubu hits back at critics Everton striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has lashed out at critics who have questioned his place in the Nigeria team at the Africa Cup of Nations. Yakubu rounded on his critics after Nigeria‘s 3-1 opening defeat to Egypt, insisting that the entire team did not play well in Tuesday‘s Group C opener in Benguela. The striker failed in every aspect of the game with no shot at goal throughout the duration of the match, prompting followers of the game to wonder why the coach allowed him to complete the match. He was so heavy and unable to run or win balls for the team. ”I have always given my best to Nigeria, I am one of the best strikers in the country and my record is there for all to see,” AFP quoted Yakubu, who was sidelined for most of last year with an achilles tendon injury, as saying on Thursday. ”But when you have four, five defensive midfielders in the team who can‘t get the ball over to the strikers, what can you do? We do not have a (Austin) ‘Jay Jay‘ Okocha or a Sunday Oliseh. ”We have been struggling in most of our games because we do not have a creative midfielder, which is not the case, for instance, at my club, where there are players who can create openings for the strikers. “It has been really very difficult for us and even the best strikers in the world would struggle in such a team.” There have been suggestions that he is higher in the striking pecking order as a result of his closeness to coach Shaibu Amodu. ”We all want to play coach and so everyone wants to pick the team,” he countered. ”But it is there for everybody to see that I have also enjoyed a good run with the coaches before Amodu simply because I‘m good enough to be in the team.” The Everton forward said despite the team‘s shortcomings he was confident the Eagles would now put behind them the 3-1 reversal they suffered at the hands of the defending champions by beating Benin on Saturday. ”Obviously, we were all very disappointed to have lost that game. ”We started well in the first 25, 30 minutes, but as soon as they drew level, we failed to defend well and eventually lost to a better team. ”We now have to focus on the next game, go out there and give our best to beat Benin.” Tuesday‘s loss has also placed a question mark over Amodu‘s future and an early Nations Cup exit could see him being replaced in time for the World Cup. http://punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201001152303198 ---- I no fit shout! ![]() |

We need a new coach period! One that understands what is required to compete in the modern game. We have to stop the rot now before it's too late.

Well in the land of the blind, one eye man is the king. Yakubu is claiming the best Nigerian striker becoz Martins was injured. So, since he knew there was no Jay Jay or Olise in the team, what effort did he make to adjust his field of play as a professional striker to yield positive result? Someone should tell this bank manager to shut up pls. Since he forgot that professionalism is all abt dynamism . The Everton he mention, how many goals has he scored there this season? In fact he and Yobo are part of the problem of Everton. He is a total failure and should jst shut up. |

Yakubu makes me laugh. Its good to know that everyone now knows that Yakubu should not be among the Super Eagles. He does not know how to play! I my self will perform more the he does. I am one of the critics. Yakubu, you do not know how to play football! Finish. |

mr.official:yakubu has a point - he scored two goals at the last nations cup so he cannot suddenly become a bad striker. If midfielders are not feeding him there is little a striker can do |

Everything boils down to good organization, if NFF had done her homework it would have known that Amodu and the team he selected are going to Angola to shame us, as for yakubu we see the records but that was the past, we need an improvement not declination of form.

The guy is indirectly blaming the coach for packing in defensive players ![]() There have been suggestions that he is higher in the striking pecking order as a result of his closeness to coach Shaibu Amodu. |
Spyker: 1:18pm On Jan 15, 2010 |
Well said yakubu, you for no play at all. We all know that it is the fault of Amodu but you are also part of the problem. If Odewingie was in that match, everyone will know that he did his best. You are a big clown for opening your mouth

Yakubu played his best football for Nigeria many years ago in the 'Battle of Omduman'. Since then, it's been steady downhill for him. He's only in the team cos of his past record and the fact that he and Amodu are from the same state - Edo. Based on current form, he ain't even good enough to play for U-17's.

The problem with Super Eagles is that there is NO coach, the team picks itself and secondly Yakubu should keep quiet since he came back from injury he is hadly used at Everton. We need a nice coach, the super eagles are a DISGRACE to watch |
