A Federal High Court sitting in Kano presided over by Justice Zainab B. Abubakar today ordered the forfeiture of the sum of $9,772,00 and £74,000 recovered from a former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Mr Andrew Yakubu to the Federal Government.

According to a statement by the EFCC, the order was sequel to an application by the EFCC seeking an interim forfeiture of the recovered money to the Federal Government.

The presiding Judge held that the recovered sum of $9, 772,000 which is now in the custody of the EFCC be forfeited to the Federal Government.

Read the full statement below;

"A Federal High Court sitting in Kano presided over by Justice Zainab B. Abubakar today ordered the forfeiture of the sum of $9,772,00 (Nine Million, Seven Hundred and Seventy-Two Thousand United States Dollars ) and £74,000 (Seventy Four Thousand Pound Sterling) recovered from a former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Mr Andrew Yakubu to the Federal Government.

The order was sequel to an ex parte application by the EFCC seeking an interim forfeiture of the recovered money to the Federal Government.

The ex parte application was moved by Salihu Sani, counsel for the applicant.

In her ruling, Justice Zainab held “That the sum of $9,772,000 (Nine Million, Seven Hundred and Seventy-Two Thousand United States Dollars) and £74,000 (Seventy Four Thousand Pound Sterling) which are now in the custody of the applicant (EFCC) are in the interim forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria”

It would be recalled that, on the 3rd day of February, 2017, operatives of the Commission had stormed a building belonging to the former NNPC boss and recovered a staggering sum of $9,772,000 (Nine Million, Seven Hundred and Seventy Two Thousand United States Dollars) and £74,000 (Seventy Four Thousand Pound Sterling) stashed in a huge fire proof safe. On February 8, 2017, Yakubu reported to the Commission’s Kano Zonal Office where he itted being the owner of both the house and the money recovered.
Yakubu is still in custody assisting the investigation.

Every tribe steals bro. We do not need tribalism.

Stealing is not apportioned to a specific tribe alone, let us evolve in our thinking and submissions unbiasedly.

A jail term of 5 years ( at least) must accompany the forfeiture ooo. That's the way to go.

Fair enough. In this crucial era of dollar scarcity d recovered loot should ameliorate the rise in forex.

My fear tho is that d corrupt ruling class will simply transfer d money to their cronies who will use it to further enrich themselves.

If we had a credible judicial system, d office of the public prosecutor will see that every law broken by d perpetrator of this act is charged against him and surely if convicted he pays for committing such an act against the state.

But I fear this may just be another selective show of anti corruption.

We needed no court here to tell the government what to do.

Forfeiture should not include the whistleblower's 10%? Else you enter into bad business

Enough is Enough

He stole enough to kill generations for the next 20 years and infact he has done just that.. and you think 5 yrs is ok.. in some countries who take corruption seriously - He would be executed publicly and all his assets forfeited to the government.. but as usual we Nigerians prefer our future to be doomed by half-measures.. these people should be killed and buried in the desert. Their actions have killed thousands in Nigeria already. Death is not good enough
