•Attakwu youths protest continued stay of herdsmen

AN Enugu State-based Fulani herdsman, Alhaji Sodu has claimed that over 100 cows belonging to him were missing as a result of an alleged attack on a Fulani settlement in the state. He also accused the youths of Aku community in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of masterminding the attack, adding that a herdsman sustained three gunshot wounds following the incident while three others were claimed to be missing. Sodu gave the name of his injured son as Wareri ,17, while Musa, Buba and Mohammed were said to be missing.

This came on a day, youths of Attaukwu community in Nkanu-West Local Government Area where herdsmen had on August 25, 2016, invaded the community slaughtering a Catholic seminarian,Lazarus Nwafor, and Ifeoma Agbo embarked on a protest over the continued stay of herdsmen in their community.

Visit to hospital

A visit to the to the Refuge Hospital, Enugu in the company of the Chairman, Enugu Constituted Security Committee, Brigadier General Fred Eze ,retd, where injured Wareri was receiving treatment showed the latter was in high spirit. However, Sodu appealed to security agencies to quickly arrest the masterminds of the attack. He said: “I am too old now to go into the forest in search of my three sons. I am appealing to security agencies to rescue my sons unharmed. The youths have slaughtered seven of my cows. Over 100 cows are missing now”.

Security committee chair allay fears

Chairman, Enugu Constituted Security Committee, Brigadier General Fred Eze ,retd, who confirmed the incident, appealed for calm adding that the committee was on top of the situation. His words: “We want to allay fears generated by this incident. The Army have moved to forestall any breakdown of law and order. The Garrison Commander, O.T Akinjobi has dispatched a search party for the missing kids. “Another combined team of Police and Army have equally moved into the area to avert any breakdown of public peace. This incident is already under investigation and authorities will unravel the remote causes of the incident and ensure that appropriate actions are taken.”

Nna, that is what I am also thinking. Ugwuanyi should be proactive and not wait for another slaughter to take place under such pretext. This allegation should not be taken lightly at all.

mynd44 this news is 100% correct....i work in a hospital where the fulani man who was shot was itted....300 cows missing..i can get for u e picture of the boy in his hospital bed....infact governor ugwuanyi visited him around 9pm yesterday

I think this story is incomplete.
In as much as the rampaging herdsmen wouldn't need any explanation for their dastard act of onslaught that will certainly follow this, the CAUSE of this attack should be verified.

It's no news of the herdsmen causing trouble, getting on peoples nerves, and when you react, they will be the first to seek legal recognition by reporting to the authorities, and getting documentaries as proof for further reference.

The truth is that Nigerians have continued to undermine the herdsmen, excusing them to be illiterate, but in the real sense they're wise and conscious of all their deeds.

The community should just be ready to face the consequence of this action. Irrespective of military presence, they still hatch their plans.
They believe that every wrong done to them is a loan that must be paid back in the same coin, irrespective of time (it could take many years).

The Youths should better start re-enforcements, so as to at least put up a resistance to them when they stage a come back. This will result to minimal loss of vulnerable lives, and properties.

The youth should never go to sleep. 24/7 vigilance should be maintained.

The Fulani herdsmen are only after publicity stunt to draw empathy and soften the heart of the aggreived locals. How can 100 cows go missing just like that?

Let's give them benefit of doubt and say someone did steal cow. That doesn't give you right to go around killing random people. Second why don't they go to police. Do their cows have brands or tags. How could anyone find their cattle if it was lost anyway.

If truly these people love their animals than their children, then they should come out with the following :
port photograph of each cow
National id
Their port.
Birth certificate
And provide police report.

what I will not is criminal activities from any quarters. Government ought to have been able to restore order. Fulani cattle are stolen always from different parts of Nigeria but the Fulani herdsmen brigandage has made it impossible for anyone to take note of that. Modern way of cattle ranching is the only way to secure the cattle and the owners. Nomadic life of Fulanis must be stopped so that Nigerians may once again enjoy relative peace.
