The senate has summoned Chris Ngige, minister of labour and employment, over his threat to withdraw the license of any bank that retrenches its staff.

Rafiu Ibrahim, chairman senate committee on banking, insurance and other financial institutions,‎ hinted the decision of the senate in a point of order he raised on the matter on the floor of the senate on Wednesday.

“The minister of labour made a statement threatening banks to stop retrenchment of staff. Banking being a very sensitive industry, any misguided statement can have a throwback on the industry‎; it can create a run on the banks,” he said.

“As the chairman of the senate committee on banking and finance, we want to invite the minister, the central bank and the banks to know if they are talking about r‎etrenchment and what will happen.

“‎We want to know the basis of the directive and the basis of the threat.”

Senate President Bukola Saraki only reacted cursorily to Ibrahim’s statement since he came under 43- which has to do with personal explanation.

“They will come and meet before your committee isn’t it? So, it is just for our information,” he said.

I never in my entire life thought that Ngige will turn out this low . Ngige was once loved and celebrated in Anambra State. Now, he is not only irrelevant in his home state, he now has stench of cluelessness all over him.

Are the banks Govt owned?

They're reacting to the negative policies set by this Govt as every business has to.....

If the banks don't adjust to these Govt policies, will the FG bail them out when they start accumulating heavy losses and debts?

Its not the banks sacking people - its indirectly the govt and they must learn to take responsibility for their actions!

Ngige does not know wat he is doing, his party the APC caused the issue on ground, so why would he want to punish the banks for sacking workers, wen the economy is heading for recession, a deep recession!

This istration must lose its military mentality. How can you be ordering private business not to sack and threatening to withdraw licenses? How? If the Federal Government orders bank not to sack their staff will the FG also order the ministry of finance to pay the staff salaries banks can no longer pay because of the hasty implementation of the TSA? If they withdraw the bank's license wouldn't the bank be forced to sack even more people? Let us use our brains to fix this economy rather than our mouths!

What should have been the priorities of this government is how to wake back this our declining economy. if the economy is on an ascending state no bank will sack workers but rather employ more as well as other organizations.
