Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), the minister of power, works and housing, has deemed it necessary to change the country’s house rent collection system.

Fashola noted this during his inaugural media meeting recently in Abuja, where he unveiled his strategic plans for the infrastructure sector.

According to The Leadership, the minister pointed out that the way rent was paid in Nigeria leads to an ing mismatch.

He said: “The way we collect rent is something that must change. If we are collecting two years rent in advance from a salary that is going to be earned in arrears monthly, there’s an ing mismatch.

“This is something many of us have experienced, you pay two years rent in advance money you haven’t earned. Something is distorted somewhere in our ing model. We must all resolve, property owners alike, that maybe if we changed the way we collected rent alone many houses that are unoccupied, will be occupied.”

Fashola also spoke in relation to the housing deficit in the country, he said: “I am inclined to think that if we just change the payment system for housing we will accommodate a significant number of people”.

The ex-governor of Lagos state went on to emphasize the need to allow the rent payment system match the salary payment system.

He said: “If salaries are paid in arrears, rent should be paid in arears.” He added that a more rigorous enforcement system for eviction would then be worked out for anyone in default.”

It would be recalled that Fashola said he is planning to address housing deficits, provide good roads and increase power generation in Nigeria with extra 2, 000 megawatts.

In his short-term agenda, the minister stressed that the Lagos-Ibadan expressway and the second Niger Bridge are of great importance and would be given urgent attention by the current istration.

I hope the government / ministry juxtaposed the effects of such changes on the citizens I hope they are not trying to facilitate more crime with our porous security.... because such changes are to be made or carried out instalmentally instead of instantaneously.

I also hope they are aware that some Governors are planning to reduce workers salaries (claiming that 18k is too much for a worker) while they Loot in billions.

However the way to drive such through is when government provides more houses and fund more mortgages .

I agree with him but this is for more stable law abiding countries, its just that people will take advantage of the situation and start giving excuses of salary not being paid thats why they cant pay rent and in a country like Nigeria where a govt can owe up to 11 months salary, I dont think thats a good idea.

Absolutely. Things like this puts pressure on people and eventually they get involved in corrupt practices in order to pay rent. Not an excuse though, bit any policy that is friendly to the common man should be welcomed.

In western world salary are paid monthly as at when due. What will a tenant tell the landlord when he is owned 10 months salary. If you are a landlord/lady will you allow your tenant(Govt worker owned 10 months salary) to stay put on such ground? Be sincere.

In western world you can be a landlord on Morgage, rent the house and pay your mortgage till the house is yours. It does not happen in Nigeria.

There is no omonile in western world.

For this theory to be practical, I will suggest the following...simple law of demand and supply

Increase the supply of housing by building new towns in each local governments of about 10000 apartments each and be collecting your rent monthly.

If this is not done, please leave homeowners to do their thing.

Road u no build, Light u no give, water -no way, security - self assigned, education -pay for yourself.

Oga Fashola, please do the needful before advising homeowners.

Flood the streets of Nigeria with affordable housing and then we will see why landlords will not comply.

Tenant: I want to rent 2 bedroom apartment
Landlord: Rent is 400k per annum, 2yrs, Agreement and commission
Tenant: Cant you take monthly pay?
Landlord: No
Tenant: Ok I will go and rent at "Fashola Estate" or @ "Buhari estate"

Option B is the way to go..in fact landlord can provide internet, cleaners etc in the house and can still pay
