Lagos state was founded as 'oko' (farmland) later corrupted as 'Eko'. And was christened Lagos, probably after lagoon, by Portuguese traders sometime after the mid-15th century and incorporated on October 1st 1963. It ethnic composition is about two-thirds of Yoruba, remainder mixed from within Nigeria and outside.
