I am ashamed of the crimes some of our naija people commit but there is always a dilemma when it comes to doing the right thing and reporting.

@ Kobojunkie,

I agree with you on some aspects of your reasoning concerning aiding and abetting these naija criminals that spoil our image. But i have to ask you, would you report to the police if your friend is using someone's else paper (with the person's permission) to work in order to make ends meet.

I ask this because i know someone whose parents are no longer able to pay her tuition and for this she had to drop out of school because of outstanding fees owed to the university. All her papers (study permit, work permit) need to be renewed and the only way to renew them is by being a ed full-time student in the university. The only way she is surviving now is by using another person's paper to work (the person is nigerian canadian). She hasn't been in school for more than a year now because she is trying to make enough money to pay up the fees and other expenses,

Now the ethical question: As an upright Nigerian, do i rat my friend out because she is breaking a Canadian law and what right do i have to do so when the person whose papers she is using is aware and not averse to the idea.

Now i understand the importance of individual contributions to building our image but what do you do when it's people that are close to you. This girl in question was offered yahoo ways to get money but she chose to work even though its with someone's identity.

These questions are also meant for you nairalanders,

Here is the thing with crime. If there are no real victims, is there really a crime, especially when we are speaking of ethics? In the case you give above, which of those involved would you consider the victim?
Now, if I am questioned about the relationship between the two people above, be sure that I will tell it like it is.

Here in the America alone, we have over 12 million illegal immigrants, many of whom work and feed their families daily. Many of them get treated by the system, so far, society does not seem rigid on implementing the many laws we have against illegal immigrants and so, I am not even sure if I can definitively label it a crime at this time without adding a BUT somewhere.

It is up to each and every one of us to be part of a change for the better, no matter where we are. I see the same sun rising on the same continent and being on the same continent I am painted with the same brush as my neighbour.

Do we condone what a neighbor is doing and all get cut off from the rest of the world, or do we cut off our neighbor and become part of the world and it's opportunities?
