Hitherto, I have always ired people that speak good English- on T.v, films, neighborhood, and some friends.Even here on nairaland , we have a good number of people that write English as though they were related to Queen Elizabeth.
I recently discovered that its much more easier for me writing English than speaking it impeccably. What should one do to speak English authoritatively and impeccably

This thread wil be useful if those riff raff stop deraillin it.....d way i speak is aweful *no shame*...i nid practical ways 2 improve on it...

1. Read alot of Best Seller Novels.

2. Stop watching Nigerian Movies. #StopIt!

3. Watch more American Movies, preferably British movies (cos the Americans speak horrible english especially the Blacks).

4. Stop writing in short texts.. E.g: hw r u? It affects your spelling ability.

5. STop speaking Pidgin English entirely.

Read novels, Read Quality Books, Listen to a very good program on-air/off-air. Stop using shorthand, write correctly and correct yourself immediately you find out you made a mistake, once in a while read those elementary english books, accept correction from both young/old.

Personally verbal english and written english has never been a problem,reason why? Because I take it as hobby to make word play,irony and metaphor eventhough I'm not a rapper,those are my verbal skills with a touch of phonetics with every words,I have no problem being honest to tell you chicks in my department often like chit chat with me because I'm good vocally and fluent verbally which makes my glow divine like a fountain flow. For further learning references,read a lot,listening to cnn,bbc and other top notch news broadcasters and lastly which works for me is listen to RAP,I'm talking hard core rap and little of commercial rappers too. *Not nigeria rappers but the US

Just speak from your nose and form "phoneh"

Never take your secondary school lightly.

Make conscious personal efforts to improve your spoken english, like listening to native speakers and always ing the correctness of sentences, grammer and pronunciations

@OP, it's not all about reading good books. You need to work on your elocution too. The environment matters as well. Listen to people that speak good English. Not those that form rubbish. I pronounce certain words differently and sometimes people are like, "wetin you talk?"

Let the dictionary be your friend. Learn to transcribe too. It helps. We learn everyday. As simple as "omniscient" is, I just learnt how to pronounce it properly few months ago. So be ready to learn.

Most importantly, be yourself. Use simple words. You don't need to impress anybody.

Read more books and learn a new word every week. Not forgetting also to understand the purpose of punctuation while speaking or reading aloud.
