What is the world turning into? Instead of molding our teenage kids to become better tools for development and peaceful coexistence, we get parents (some) doing the very opposite. For non-residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Jikwoyi, is an outskirt community. Two mothers fight over their teenage daughter’s boyfriend. It started like a wild joke. Two teenage girls, Merit and Nene date Kingsley, a Sales Manager with one of the companies in Abuja. Kingsley who is at the centre of the storm lives at a mini estate in phase IV of Jikwoyi, a suburb in the Federal Capital Territory, is said to be in his late 30s and has a good job with his apartment tastefully furnished. Albany in her usual amebo restlessness gathered that one of the girls, Merit (16 years), resides in the same compound with Kingsley is said to be encouraged by her mother who is a civil servant in one of the Ministries. On the other hand, Nene (16 years of age) whose mother is a contractor comes to the compound to help Kingsley with his house chores and occasionally the night with her lover. Busybodies told Albany that tension started when Merit’s mother was said to have scolded her daughter for “doing nothing while someone from outside is coming to take her husband.” Speaking in Pidgin English Busybody told Albany, “bros na Merit mama dey encourage the girl to date Kingsley. She dey even dey call the guy my in-law korokoro wey everi bodi sabi say na so she dey call am and Merit dey help wash him clothes and even cook for am. Kasala come burst when dem discover say Nene dey come the compound, come see Kingsley, na I’m she go warn Nene mama say make she hold her child.” Nene’s mother did not take the matter lightly as she was said to have responded in an equally belligerent manner which led to a fight between both women. Not to be outdone by their mothers, the girls were said to have engaged each other in a fight with both of them tearing each other’s clothes and calling each other all sort of unprintable names. Kingsley is not perturbed by the fight between both families for his love as he has continued to date the two girls. Confiding in a close friend, Kingsley had said that he will continue to date both girls until he relocates” adding that “they are too young for him to settle down with any one of them.” [img]What is the world turning into?
