Some important points: 1. Lawmakers need to focus more on actual lawmaking and reduce time spent on oversight. 2. Lawmakers' salaries should be restructured to reflect the part-time nature of their work. Salaries should be paid PER SITTING. 3. Constituents need a reorientation on the role of a representative. The idea of "constituency projects" is a big misnomer. It is not a lawmaker's function to provide boreholes, scholarships, roads, schools and hospitals to his community... State governors and LGA chairmen should be held able for all these. 4. Lawmakers need to set annual targets with regard to the number of bills they intend to and communicate these to Nigerians every year so that they can be held able just like the president. In a democracy, governance is a collaborative process. We cannot keep blaming the president for all the nation's woes and absolve lawmakers from their fair share of blame. We must begin to hold ALL arms and ALL tiers of government able for their (in)actions. 11 Likes |

When some of our legislooters had nothing to contribute, except the usual phrase"I reserve my comment",and only interested in sitting allowance, and other benefit.

Out of the 107 days which †hey sat for, what and what did they achieve to earn the bogus salaries they collect. Plenary or not, they are always running their personal businesses and awarding contracts to their personal companies. I'm saying these from experience 1 Like |

These are the people whom we pay billions of naira in salary? According to the OP, 1) The legislative calendar is a June - June affair- not January- December. 2) The constitution doesn't specify how the calendar should be run. So- its inconclusive whether or not they are short of plenary sessions for a legislative year |

Kadata: Here yourself out, how many days do they have in a year? 365 days right? Yet, they had 107 day + 140 vacation day bringing it to a total of 247days. Meanwhile, From June to December is 7months, it means they have completed 58% out of 100%(12months) of the cycle. So multiply 58% of 365 days, that's a total of 211 days. So they used 211 as against 247 days, that's 36 days extra vacation time. So please tell me, if they used 36 days extra in 7months, isn't it obvious they will use another 24days or more in the remainder of them day up till June? 1 Like |

HNosegbe: Some important points: Bros, no flattering o, you have put it succinctly. For oversight functions, they should adopt "management by exception". Constituency projects should be scrapped or delivered through other means and shld be decided based on the real needs of the locals with their inputs in the choice. 1 Like |

Yes, they always have somewhere to hide, imagine saying the constitution does not specify their calendar, does the constitution specify how much they should get as salary and allowances yet they reach conclusion on that, but when it comes to progress of the nation they come with excuses. They should be more transparent in their activities and responsibilities in that house, by setting that calendar and make it constitutional and follow it everytime instead of the excuse when they are about to expose them and be more focus on activities of the executive arms for checks and balances and not their pocket interest.

This applies to the PDP legislators only. Those from the "opposition" parties declined to take the 140 days of vacation. They worked throughout in caucuses drafting very useful bills for their constituents. Two of the bills sponsored by the Association of Conmen in Nigeria (ACN) caucus, was to reduce their salaries & allowances to align with RMAFC provisions & scrap the constituency projects as they promised to work hand in hand with the state governors and LGA chairmen and councillors to address the infrastructural needs of their areas of responsibility. ![]() What is the difference between: a) six b) half a dozen |

Naija is not only a sick nation, but it has been cursed from the depths of the pit of HELL. Questions: 1. How many laws which can be said to better the lot of the common man were ed in Yr 2012? Meanwhile, they had 107 plenary sessions. 2. For crying out loud, there are 365 days in a year and these clowns only worked for 107 and eneded up being paid Billions ![]() 3. What actually can we describe as these people's PRACTICAL relevance to the welfare of the Nigerian state? Oh yes! apart from chasing all those Abuja ashees all over the place. 4. Why wouldn't anybody kill to become a Rep? You work for 107 days in a year, show no tangible results for the number of days worked in the year, chase and fork the choicest chics in Nigeria, and end up getting paid billions of naira for doing all these? Oh God, please get me out of this terminally ill nation and take me to a developed countr. |

From my calculation,at least they made 135-150m each. Pls divide 135m by 181 days and multiply by 74 days absent which is 55.193m each.Thats our refund and multiply by 360 OR so which comes up to 19.87b naira. With this amount we are sure of 25 boreholes each in 774 local govts in Nigeria. Wasteful Govt. |

It is not possible. I can bet it, it can't be up to 107.

there are various points highlighted above by HNosegbe, anonimi, etc if only stringent measures are been taken to curb the influence of our lawmakers on some of these oversight functions they partake, it will go a long way reducing disputes among all tiers of govt

Even if they sit for 365days in a year and the purpose of their sitting is not for the betterment of Nigerians but to enrich their own pocket, then it has no meaning.
