Why does the government always use that word "Endurance". Why didn't they find an alternative before banning okadas. It's always the masses that have to endure but the government never endures for even a single day.

LAGOS — Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, yesterday, urged residents of the state to endure whatever inconveniences the restriction of commercial motorcycle operators popularly called Okada riders from the state metropolis might have caused them.He shouldn't urge them to endure...rather he should come with a means by which Lagosians can enjoy a fast, affordable and a much safer means of transportation. You can't block man's source of income and ask him to endure...endure on what... Fashola who made the appeal at the 2012 edition of the Lagos State Community Day Celebration, held at the Police College, Ikeja, theme: ‘The Role of Community Development in Tackling Security Challenges in Nigeria,’ said that the problems were characteristic of the introduction stage of every life -changing law and policies of the government.Fashola should concentrate more on tackling crime in the state, rather than banning okada men...if at all he should ban them, then giving time restrictions by which they should operate (eg. 7am-8pm) would be a fair judgment... Lagos is being hunted by petty thieves and dare devil robbers. If banning okada is the best approach he can come up with to curb this menace, then Lagos is doomed. He, however, assured the residents that the legislation would be of great benefit to Lagosians in the long-run.“There will be no gain without some pain attached to it. And every resident of Lagos should be ready to sacrifice for the reward that would come in a short time.”Which residents are you referring to oga Fashola...is it the ones your istration dumped at upeweka, or the ones you told to go back to their villages as a result of the hardship your istration has put them through. Be specific sir... Okada Riders…So is Fashola promising that the ban would be lifted up once he's done with the construction of roads in Lagos? According to him, “Okada will not be our transportation model in this state. Other states have banned it and heaven did not fall in those states. Our state will not be a dumping ground for motorcycles. But instead of banning it in Lagos, what the government has done was to restrict their operations on 475 roads out of 9,000 roads.”He (Fashola) cannot compare the population of other states to that of Lagos....Lagos is a mega city filled with millions of people...so every means of transportation that would ensure that residents gets easy access within the state should be welcomed. He emphasised:“I think we have been extremely generous with the new road traffic law. What we want from residents is some sacrifice.”I think you're harsh and care very little about the plight of those you govern. 3 Likes |

Those Okada's are complete nuisance to other road s esp the aboki's who have taken over the 'profession'. A partial ban that takes them away from the major highaways seems okay. However, govt MUST make effort to employ them otherwise crime will be on the increase just like we are seeing too many cars on the road now

greall1: stop compare delta state with Lagos. The ban in Delta State was Complete (in Warri and Asaba) while in Lagos, it is on "on 475 roads out of 9,000 roads". Hope you see the difference in approach. Okada is a menace that should be gotten rid off in all major cities.. 2 Likes |

Well said BRF We need to build a city with fast moving trains and buses. I know Nigerians that walk several miles in New York and London with shopping bags in their hands. The risk is enormous and they are increasingly getting lawless and come to think of it, over 90% of crimes are perpetrated using bikes and they constitute more than 70% of victims of road accidents. I also don't think everyone should drive to work everyday. That's what buses are there for. Call them BRT or danfo 4 Likes |
