Mutegi: I agree with your assessment. Ethnic cleansing always targets the tribes percieved as doing better: the enterprising Jews in , the Igbos doing their bussiness in Kano/Kaduna in the 1960s, and now the Kikiyus of Kenya. There is no question that these tribes enjoyed some real or imagined advantages, but every political upheaval becomes an opportunity for their tribal neighbours to vent age-old antagonism by way murder, looting, and rape. |

bawomol: See, this is your main problem, you don't see what's wrong with the naija federal government, because you identify with the people runinning for a very long time now. You want to continue to 'weak and poor' state governments until they can 'generate revenues for themselves. I hope you see the basic injustice in your premise. The states should not have been created in the first place if they can't themselves, but the criminal political minds created these states as a way of getting and keeping advantages over the south. This sounds like another source of dispute on the political equation of naija.----hopefully it would be settled without violence/looting/and ethnic cleansing. |

See, this is your main problem, you don't see what's wrong with the naija federal government, because you identify with the people runinning for a very long time now. correction, i am fine with a federalized form of government. there's obviously problems with the naija system but it can be fixed. You want to continue to 'weak and poor' state governments until they can 'generate revenues for themselves. I hope you see the basic injustice in your premise. US states till these day get aid from the federal government. it takes money to make money ![]() The states should not have been created in the first place if they can't themselves, but the criminal political minds created these states as a way of getting and keeping advantages over the south. that's the past and doesn't matter, the main emphasis should be made on making the state functioning and less dependent on the federal government or else they should be dissolved. |

bawomol: You're quite wrong comparing the US states revenue system with naija. US states get less than 10% of their revenues from the federal government, the states instead pay a lot more to the federal government in form of taxes, levies, etc. You can't speak about the US system if you don't understand the basic nature of revenue; going from individuals/companies to states, then to the federal government. In naija, that traffic is crookedly reversed with the federal government paying the states, the local government, and individuals. Do you understand the concept of federal cake in naija? That's why there is a fight, it will never end until basic injustice against fellow citizens is addressed. Sure it take money to make money, but in naija it takes other peoples blood and property to make money for Hausa people, and you think there is nothing wrong with picture? |

US states get less than 10% of their revenues from the federal government, the states instead pay a lot more to the federal government in form of taxes, levies, etc. i'm confused, in what ways do the state pay a lot back to the federal government in forms of taxes. i thought most of the US revenues comes from the estate tax, taxing hedge funds and corporations etc. states still get funding from the federal government to build roads, aid their transportation system and combat crime. there's a reason pork-barrel politics is common in congress. 10% is pretty significant. In naija, that traffic is crookedly reversed with the federal government paying the states, the local government, and individuals. it's not fault of the federal government that state and local government are ineffective. the centralize system should remain until regions/states can operate on their own. Do you understand the concept of federal cake in naija? i understand, it's bad. the problem isn't the system of government, but people that implement it. |

If you don't understand how the US states contribute to the upkeep of the federal government, please go read some American history. You would see how the original 13 colonies taxed themselves to the federal government, today, the taxing may not be as apparent, but the structure is still there. Yes, the federal government gives grants for specific projects, that's all. These grants sometimes make very small part of the budget. In naija, the state governments, some of which should not have been created, depend on the federal government allocation for more than 95% of their budget. When you have so many people depending desperately for the federal money, there is no way someone would not feel cheated at the end of the day. The result is that northern politicians designed policies to shift as much money to the north as much as possible, of course at the detriment of the south. Viable state/regional governments operated in naija before oil became the issue. The north, east and west largely ed themselves. |

We can start by deleting that damn tribalism section.

^^ Denying tribalism when it exists doesn't solve the problem. |

^^^Well, creating an avenue for people of different ethnic groups to bash each other just makes it worse.

^^^ There's some truth to your point, but its always better to air out the differences than to keep them bottled up. I have learnt a lot even from posters who disparage my own tribe in this forum, but this is no excuse to disrespect each other unnecesarily. |
