Only skill and a nice array of projects to show off. I am yet to see a programming job that lays emphasis on degrees. They always put computer science there though but in my experience its never adhered to and there's also nothing like connections. I didn't need to know anyone to get invites interviews unlike in most engineering fields where you have to know someone that knows someone to be able to get employed.

But as a c++ programmer ...

What tasks do you do for the company...because I know c++ isn't great for web design or data analyst...

Besides what about python...is it advisable to learn that one too??

If you are looking to get into web development.
Learn HTML, CSS, JavaScript. If your goal is to work for a big company learn angular. Angular is a Javascript framework. If medium sized companies to startups are your thing then learn React.

For the backend if big companies are your thing pick up either java or c#. If medium sized companies are your thing pick up PHP and Nodejs. Smaller companies and startups mostly used Nodejs.

I am not a C++ programmer. I only recommended it to younger programmers because it forces you to think. It has a very deep syntax. Those younger people don't have any responsibilities and aren't looking to get a job. For older people they should learn what the labour market needs firsts and learn the others down the road.

2019 to date- Canada Permanent Resident, manager at a top company, doing MBA and also doing PhD on full scholarship.
I graduated in Nov. 2010.

I did poultry business that's egg production for the first year after my nysc from the money I saved during my service year,then most of my friends do insult me that I smell like fowl shit.then I do sale eggs,mine wasn't enough for customer's so I do buy from other farm's in village's to supplement mine,I did this for like a year and some months,when my birds stopped giving me maximum amount of eggs u started looking for a buyer as God may have it,as I was ing by I met a man (Ugo from okija) carrying a truck load of old layers(fowl)when I stopped him to enquire weda he deals on birds,he affirmed he does so I told him I have birds to sale and at good rate,he told me that he just brought birds from ibadan that he can't buy more for the week,I insisted that I can sale mine myself if given the opportunity (the birds were consuming more feeds without laying egg)as God may have it he accepted but I will give him commission.
I finished the sales of the 431 birds within two hours and gave him his commission for using some part of his space.
the upper week he wanted to go to ibadan to get fowl at fabis farm,that week his conductor was sick and he needed someone to go with him,I obliged to follow but that I need to buy mine too,that's how I started the business.
December the next year a man that I do buy feeds from (emmason)called me to intimate me that there's a farm he do supply feeds on credit that owed him(capuchin farm's)a roman Catholic farm,he asked weda I can help him sale their birds during that festive period that they're looking for who to buy in bulk for him to recoup his money.on dec 21 they gave me on credit 500 birds at the flat rate of #1000 each I sold 1500 because it was festive period, before 1 pm I went back for more 1000 birds I did sale also for 1500each(then I the market I said to myself na so person dey get money)the next day I took 2500 birds did the same.

People like us who are over 10 years post-graduation also have a few things to share.
Me for one I've never worked for government since 19gidibi I graduated, I applied though.
I was told to my face to go and look for god-father.
Whereas all of my education were in government schools oh,
I mean creche to PG.
Yes in my time government owned creche/day-care/nursery or whatever nomenclature that suits you.
But I don't know if they still run such now.

But I encourage everyone not go regret going to school and graduating,
I'll never have it another way.

Well I did marine engineering. It took me a year after graduation with thousands of applications to get one interview. The jobs didn't even exist. I just sent out my CVs to the email address of shipping companies and prayed something hit.

I ran a business for a while and learnt to code and men it's so easy to get a programming job. It's only in the tech industry that one would apply for jobs and be getting an interview 3 hours later. Do well in an interview and you would be getting a job the next day.


I thought it's just me as a marine engineer but apparently many of my friends with engineering degrees can't get jobs. The jobs don't even exist. It's not about going online and sending out applications. How do you send out applications to what isn't there. The world is changing now. Proper research on the job market has to be done before one goes into the university. Don't go based on hearsay. Go and do your findings yourself.

Well, It is exactly 10 years this year and I must say the journey has not been that easy. I never sought for employment though. I had been running business: Recharge Card in Bulk before it went South after some robbery incident.

I got some few connections with Baba Obasanjo, so I worked at OOPL for 2 years from 2015-2017. But that life was not what I was designed for. I resigned and went back to the drawing board.

Presently I freelance and I think I have made in 3 years what I was only able to gather in 7 years.

My ADVISE:
Enterpreneurship is not for everyone and office is not for everyone. Understand your calling and follow it. But I think it is okay to gather experience working with a corporate firm for 5-10 years before launching your own business full time.
