They are both allied health practitioners. A pharmacist is a professional involved with the compounding and dispensing of medications, and it also includes more modern services related to health care , including clinical services, reviewing medications for safety and efficacy, and providing drug information. A Nurse is a professional within the health care sector focused on the care of individuals, families, and communities so they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal health and quality of life. The norms in the world for pharmacy training is Doctor of pharmacy, and this training takes 6 years ( the Bachelor of pharmacy is still being attained in some institutions). In Nigeria here Only Uniben and unilorin that has fully started 6 yr Doctor of pharmacy program while the rest still runs B.pharm. Bsc nursing takes 5 years in Nigeria. After the 5-6 years university training, they both undergo another form of training called internship in an accredited Teaching hospital or Federal medical centre. Let's talk about Job opportunities. A pharmacist can be employed by both as Clinical pharmacist in the hospital, community pharmacist in pharmacy retail outlet , research Institute ( new drugs invention) , pharmaceutical companies ( where drugs are produced). All the ventures in which they can be employed are either government owned or private enterprise. And they both pay well. The road to self employment is another path a pharmacist can tour. You can have your shop and make your hundred of thousands to millions. A nurse can like wise be employed by either government or a private venture in an hospital. The hospital is literally the place a nurse can only be employed. Though NGO's sometimes employs for community outreach and co. A nurse can also choose to be self employed by having his nursing home and rendering his services to the ailed. Both Nurses and pharmacist can also become tutors of there various profession in the university if they should have higher degree( the pay is literally the same). And base on abroad opportunities, nurses has more chances of being employed and practice there profession compared to Pharmacists. @ the op, the ball is in your court But note, they are all path to an average life in Nigeria except you add entrepreneurship to both profession. 21 Likes 1 Share |

amaniro: Check if they are really nurses first. Nurses are professionals in their own right and cannot be bossed around by anyone. Their demand is also crazy outside of the country. Anyone who wants to Port out can choose Nursing ahead of pharmacy. But pharmacy is more academic, and they are obviously more respected in Naija, than Nurses for now. 8 Likes |

If your plan is to travel overseas to practice especially USA and what matters most to you is to work work and make money then l advice you go for nursing. It's a lot easier to get your licence to practice once you your state Board RN exam, you have a shorter number of years to spend in school also if you are willing to put a lot of hours overtime and juggle between jobs there's better opportunity for you to do so. There's also job flexibility you can choose to work day or night since hospital is open 24/7 and a lot of nurses are needed to staff each unit however a hospital that utilizes over 50 nurses per shift may require no more than 4 pharmacist to cover the shift so most pharmacist does not work in the hospital but in a pharmacy store which usually closes at certain time at night therefore limiting your opportunity to work day and night if you have the strength.

Irrespective of the fact that you're traveling or not nursing is a nono for me pharmacists are paid more than nurses, and you have more job opportunities form pharmaceutical companies to hispitals, and food processing companies, NURSES WOULD BE SUBORDINATES TO DOCTORS FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES!!!! pls and pls don't opt for nursing Samsung004 4 Likes |

Samsung004: The problem with this thread is that the answers are from people who are outside the sector. Opportunities keep increasing continuously for nurses. Even in Nigeria, nurses get NGO jobs more than even doctors, occupational health nurses are more in demand in companies. A traditional hospital can only employ a few pharmacists but majority of staff will be nurses and most reputable facilities are employing degree nurses now. Overall, both are great professions but I think nurses have more opportunities currently. 7 Likes 1 Share |

Nursing is better, as a nurse if you no get job, you can go straight into operating a pharmacy with some licence that will cost you little money and from your store you can be giving medications to patients to grow your wealth. B.Nursing is the way forward.

Samsung004: Very Important distinction Nurse practitioner pays almost same as Pharmacist and u will have prescriptive ability. Note that I distinguish between Nurse Practitioner (NP) from ed Nurse that is not an NP. This distinction is very clear if you live in USA or Canada. Why? Because an NP is a masters degree level nurse who practices at an advanced stage. This is different from a BSc Nursing(called ed Nurse) only person who, yes, makes good money, but is still not an NP. For you to became a Nurse Practitioner in USA or Canada, you must have been a ed Nurse first. However, if your question meant to ask if Nurses and Pharmacists earn same, then No. The Pharmacist would normally earn higher than an ordinary BScN trained Nurse. 4 Likes |
