RIP. A similar incident, I was told, happened elsewhere some years back, when up to six people died. A geologist was said to have explained later that certain soil formations emit noxious fumes when exposed; he opined that the victims may have died as a result of inhalation of such fume. This explanation seems very plausible to me in both cases.

This happen due to oxygen deficiency and the presence of toxic gas, Nigeria has a long way to go cos they neglect safety , well digging has a lot of procedure , there should be conduction of gas test cos it's a confined space but seems our graduate are illiterate.

Four persons have lost their lives in Kabba, Kogi State when the wall of a well collapsed on them.

Spokesman for Kogi Police Command , DSP William Aya, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the victims were labourers engaged by a woman to renovate the well.

Aya, who spoke to NAN on phone, gave the names of the victims as Kayode Ayeni, Niyi Jimoh, Olusanmi Sunday and Ayo Sunday.

According to him, the incident happened at about 6:30 p.m. on Monday in Sango area of Kabba.

He said that a distressed call was received by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Kabba who quickly responded by sending a team of policemen to the scene.

He said that the police team dug out the victims and rushed them to the Government General Hospital, Kabba where they were pronounced dead by doctors on duty.

Aya said that the bodies of the victims, whose ages ranged from 30-35 years, were deposited at the morgue of the hospital.

The police spokesman said that the woman who hired the labourers to work on her 25-feet well also collapsed on learning about the incident and was itted at the same General Hospital. (NAN)

There is a big possibility that methane or carbon monoxide are present in that well this can be due to carbon compounds such as twigs or plants that has gone through the process of decomposition. Since they are denser than oxygen, displacement of oxygen from the bottom and inner layers of the wells will occur. Death will occur in 1-3mins.

Four Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates including two brothers, drowned in a well they were contracted to dig at Zango quarters in Kabba in Kogi state on night Monday April 1st. The deceased persons whose names were given as David, Sunday, Ayo and Ogbekedo were well known for their specialty in digging wells in the area.

According to reports, a primary school teacher, Mrs Agnes Baiyere, had allegedly hired one of the deceased, David, to dig a well in front of her newly constructed building in the area. David then invited three other of his colleagues to execute the job. They were said to have dug the well up to about 25 feet for about a week and even plastered the outer part of the well when two of them went back last night to evacuate some broken blocks that fell into the well.


However, when one of them entered into the well, he was said to have complained of dizziness which led to the other person quickly coming to the aid of his friend, but the two were mysteriously trapped into the well and could not come out.

The remaining two men rushed to the scene and attempted to rescue their trapped colleagues. Sadly as they got into the well, they were trapped in the well and could not come out.

of staff of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, (AEDC), Kabba office, who were around the area when the incident happened, helped evacuate the remains of the four deceased persons.

Eyewitness said as they were been rushed to the General Hospital, Kabba, one of the deceased opened his eyes after a pastor prayed for them but he died as they were stepping into the hospital.

One of the sympathisers said David, who attended the new month service in his church on the fateful day, just got married after completing his NYSC last year.

The remains of the deceased were said to have been deposited in the mortuary of the Kabba General hospital.

the story didn't add up. how can 4 able men just die like that in a mysterious circumstances and in a mysterious well. no body was there to shout for help.

this kind of thing is usually as a result of karma.
Check their history well, the four of them may have done something bad or scammed someone who contracted them to dig a well and the person cursed them that they will perish in the next well they attempt to dig

Most of those who have commented don't know that there is a spirit in the well. Sometime in the 80s, a similar incident happened, then I was in my village, some young boys were called to dig a well in the front of a house, a few days later the landlord sent his son to fetch water from the well and while he was fetching, the bucket to which the rope was attached, suddenly cut into two. The boys who dug the well were quickly sent for to remove the bucket from the well. To everyone's surprise, the first boy went into the well and got hooked, the second boy outside the well was communicating to him but there was no response from him, not knowing he had been hooked by a spirit. He, trying to rescue him, went into the well and got hooked. At this juncture many people had converged on the well to know what was happening, they all agreed to let the third boy go for the rescue of the first two boys. So he went into the well like the first two boys, but had not gone deeply into the well when he said "I feel dizzy". He quickly went out. It was then everyone knew a spirit was in the well. The villagers called aboki boys who were expert in digging well. When they arrived the scene, they said "it's ground demons that inhabited the land that doesn't want well dug on the ground." They went into the well and brought the two boys out dead.
