Buhari Moves To Block Influx Of Foreign Construction Workers Into Nigeria (44265 Views)

Mogidi:A large percentage of expatriate actually fall into those fields you listed. You think all those guys you see on oil fields and construction sites actually have a degree or a diploma ![]() Most of them are journeymen trade persons (secondary school+vocational training) in their countries of origin. why not Nigerians? There are Nigerians but very few. It takes at least 4 years of training (trade school and work experience) to become competent enough to work on some of those equipments that cost thousands to millions of dollars. The title of the article is misleading though. 2 Likes |

IlekeHD:Although I want my N5000 too, that plays no part in my original argument. Have you ever heard of Europeans building mud huts without African supervision? Now tell me how I'd build a European-themed castle without importing foreign hands. Abi construction workers from eastern Nigeria know how to build something Caucasians lived in for hundreds of years better? |
IlekeHD: 12:16am On Nov 07, 2015 |
charix: Have you ever heard of European companies employing African companies to build their infrastructure? Do you know how much is paid for these human labors? It's ridiculous and it's an insult to African education. |

IlekeHD:You've no argument here and're typing straight from emotion. 1. Europeans in trying to build an African-themed park would always employ a handful of Africans to ensure authenticity in the finished work. Europeans would always put in the labour but overseers always would have African origin. 2. No school in Nigeria teaches Eurocentric architecture. Na Yoruba man wan build me castle? Of course I'd fly in foreign experts. 3. Read all my comments from the first down to this reply to understand my point of view. Responding with the same comments is now akin to shouting at a brick wall. |

This is one of my expectation of the new government, how do you explain a situation where an indian is flown into Nigeria just to do basic welding, does that mean that we do not have capable qualified welders in this country ? imagine 2000 plus indians working in just one or two plants of our great business man '-------' not to mention also Chinkos - china men also working in some of the plants, hey we need to wake up ..... this people will not even look at you in their country , talk less of employing you to weld for them. yes we need to regulate the type of foreign workers that we allow to come to this country. i have also seen the so called skilled foreign workers or specialists from UK, ... who actually do not even know the subject matter in detail, but they come here and pose as expats , ,,,,,,wake up Nigeria .... no more sleeping ......the world is moving forward and we are still in a slumber mode..... 1 Like |

charix: Employing Africans means nothing. Our government should be encouraging and investing our local companies to grow to these europen standards. This is why Innosan will remain a regional company. Who cares about Eurocentric architecture? Should we be wanting to build like them or to build better than them? |

Mogidi:If because of this Buhari is a joke then you are an idiot. How is his expelling migrants in the 80's the same as having locals trained in skills required for construction projects and development of the country? Should he say nothing or do nothing until the number of aliens reaches or sures the number of Nigerians in Ghana and West Africa? What that has to do with revamping training centres to train the youths? You remained silent when unskilled migrant labourers were brought in to work on projects....I guess you think that is such a smart move. When the present projects are completed by skilled migrants....who would maintain the projects?...unskilled locals?...and you would be shouting the loudest about Nigeria's lack of maintenance culture. You are so quick to attack the messenger without understanding the message. Nigeria would be much better off if you and your likes would just migrate ... to Ghana or West Africa or wherever...just leave...foreign minded enemies of progress. 3 Likes |

IlekeHD:Until this is feasible then I do not getting rid of foreign companies. The same people applauding this move will always castigate the president first when bridges and buildings fall under their first year of use due to shabby construction. |

sweatlana: Wailers are far more objective than the zombie chantoids. ![]() But GMB's way is always reactionary. It takes more than just training to replace expatriates. It has to be of high quality. Otherwise, it technical schools will churn-out half-baked techicians like universities/polys are doing now. We would then be Billions out of pocket, but still where we were before. This may just turn out to be more job & siphoning avenue for the 95% boys. ![]() ![]() |

Mogidi: Very senseless comment; you mean the country should allow an influx for foreign artisans, carpenters, masons, painters, welders etc - in short basic skilled positions that ordinary homegrown Nigerians can easily fill, while we still have high level of youth unemployment? Its no wonder that some of you are quite comfortable with the irresponsible practice of wasting our hard earned foreign currency on the importation of such frivolous items as toothpicks and the likes - under Jonathan istration. |

Am not Buhari's fan but I must confess that this is a good development. This is much more better than ghost-probing. Yes! Empower the youths and empower the nation. I also want the foreign construction companies in Nigeria to go to their countries and construct. We have competent civil engineers and other related professionals in Nigeria that can do all our construction works. Go to any Western/developed country, you will never see them empowering foreigners in any of their sectors but here in Nigeria you see us believing so much in expatriates while shunning our own. Let us appreciate our own. Thank you Mr. President. 1 Like |

Mogidi: You are the one grossly incapable of comprehending simple English. Have you seen the small boys these construction companies bring in the name of expatriates to work in Nigeria? They don't when know anything. It is still the Nigerian artisans that teach them the work. The only problem is that the Nigerian artisans do not have the paper qualifications. This is a welcome development. |

When buhari begins to chase foreign investors, then where would the jobs come from? From his statement now, foreign investors will begin to shake that they will not be treated well and their money is not guaranteed so why invest in the country?

Nigeria is ready for greatness. F*** Julius berger. They make shitty roads anyway ( and this is coming from a civil engineer) |
