Okada Riders Now Ply Oshodi-Apapa, Lagos-Badagry Expressway Unhindered by Nobody: 9:57pm On Dec 16, 2014
Less than two years into the implementation of the Lagos Road Traffic Law 2012, commercial motorcyclists (popularly known as okada riders) have returned to some of the roads the law prevents them from plying.

Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Lagos-Badagry Expressway, Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Agege Motor Road, Lagos-Ikorodu Road, Iba-LASU Road and Isolo-Ikotun Road are among the routes okada riders have resumed their business uninterrupted.

When the law became fully operational about two years ago, the busy routes and other hundreds of inner city ones regained sanity, while motorcycle-related accidents reduced by over 50 per cent, according to statistics by the Lagos State Government.

But with the exception of the Third Mainland Bridge and a few other roads, especially on the Island, findings show that okadas, with their associated oddities, have returned to the expressways where they compete with other road s.

Some people have viewed the comeback as a response to an obvious need. For instance, those who commute between Apapa and Mile 2 said the perpetual gridlock on the route had left them with no option but to shuttle the places via motorbikes.

“If they insist okada should not ply the road, what options do commuters have? If you spend a whole day on the road, you may not still get to Wharf, unless you navigate through Surulere, which is also not predictable,” Dotun Adefarasin, a clearing agent, lamented.

With the worsening traffic jam on the Apapa road comes hundreds of okada riders to lessen (and also ironically compound) the pains of those who ply it regularly. What other motorists have done in the past months is to learn to tolerate okadas that move in droves on the busy way. Yet, they expect the riders to be more discrete in choosing where to park.

You only need to witness the traffic from 'Okoko to Mile 2' along this Badagry Express Way before you it that LASG made a mistake in banning Okada along that route.

I pity those who ply it everyday and those that are in a hurry but can't afford the bike fare.
Specific places like Okokomaiko Bus-Stop, Alaba Rago, Iyanaoba route, Barracks-Underbridge, Maza-Maza, e.t.c. are bound to steal 3-hours of your time at its worst.

This happens when lawmakers who don't diligently think through the process make laws.

When BRT is the only means of mass transport in the so called mega city project how can a sane person ban "Okada?".

Lagos lawmakers should have find out what other "mega cities" have put in place as public transportation before enacting such draconian law. It's like banning "pure water" because it litters the streets without taking cognisance of the fact that government fail to supply portable water.

They enact laws for others. The law banning Okada does not affect them. Okada riders' opinion was not factored in making the law.

Another classic example is the LASAA law banning all posters. This demonic law is only enforced on the weak: the Nollywood, other small businesses struggling to survive. Now it is electioneering time and the same former Lagos Attorney General Shashore, Speaker Hon Ikuforiji and all the other politicians flagrantly break the law they enacted. Their posters are everywhere in Lagos.

It was crass of them to enact the law in the first place and then to disregard it now. LASAA is playing the ostrich by relaxing the enforcement of the law to suit its paymasters.

It's lately partnering with APG to permit pasting of poster. Only electioneering period opened LASAA's eyes to the real need for the lifting of the blanket ban on pasting of posters.

These guys stare at death in the face and say "Catch me if you can". They don't even give a hoot about the side of the traffic they're on. They're the suicide bombers of Lagos. Even if they're not banned, they should be regulated like crazy!!! These guys aren't from this planet. They must be from Mars (Biker mice, anybody?).

yes but because of numerous constructions taking place on that route, they dont have alternative than to use the medium to carry desperate engers that need to settle some businesses. Besides, police still arrest them but not like before that their okada will be totally seized. They collect fee, then release them on the spot, so if eventually caught on the express way ,they know what to do immediately, and continue their business.
