PRESS RELEASE

RE: FATAL TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT INCIDENT INVOLVING OYTMA AND POLICE PERSONNEL.

The Oyo State Police Command regrets to inform the general public of a tragic incident that occurred during a t traffic enforcement operation with the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA), which led to the unfortunate death of a 14-year-old male, Kehinde Alade.
2.At approximately 0745 hours on May 20th, 2025, along the Airport Roundabout, Alakia-Adelubi/Airport Road, Egbeda Local Government Area, an enforcement team comprising OYTMA officers and personnel of the Oyo State Police Command attempted to stop a black Honda Accord (LAGOS registration number FST 639 JJ), driven by one Odunayo Alade,’m’ (father of the deceased young male) who was found to be driving against traffic (one-way).
Rather than complying with lawful directives, the driver allegedly accelerated towards the enforcement team in an attempt to evade arrest, ramming into two OYTMA vehicles and a Police Buffalo Patrol truck.

3.In an effort to prevent further damage and harm to officers and other road s, barricades were set up to demobilize the fleeing vehicle. However, the driver reportedly broke through these barricades, continuing to drive recklessly and endangering lives.

4.Given the nature of the driver's conduct, officers suspected possible criminal activity or a case of abduction. A police chase ensued. In an attempt to immobilize the vehicle, a police corporal discharged a firearm aimed at the tyres. Tragically, the bullet missed and struck Kehinde Alade ‘m’, who was seated in the rear seat behind the driver. He was immediately rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), where he was confirmed dead on arrival. The deceased’s body has been deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital mortuary for autopsy and preservation.

5.To forestall any threat to public peace, the Commissioner of Police, Johnson Adenola, psc, immediately deployed tactical and intelligence units, including the Police Mobile Force (PMF), to the scene and other strategic locations in Ibadan. This swift response restored calm, ensured public safety, and allowed for normal activities to resume.

6.The Commissioner of Police has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident, to be led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). The officer responsible for the discharge of the firearm has been taken into custody and, along with other of the team, is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation. The Command assures the public that the process will be transparent and the findings made public.

7.The Oyo State Police Command extends its deepest condolences to the family of Kehinde Alade. The Command remains resolute in its commitment to upholding justice and ensuring ability. Further updates will be communicated as the investigation progresses.

8.In cases of emergency, the Command can be ed through the Oyo State Call Response Center: 615 or call any of the following Oyo State Police Command Control Room Numbers: 08081768614, 09054133071, and 09061299291.

Help me answer this.
1. The police say it was a traffic management operation.
How do you enforce traffic with arms and ammunition? What business does the police have with helping a state government outfit to enforce traffic? Armed police for that matter.

2. The police said they put up road blocks to stop the fleeing vehicle.
If there is traffic you are enforcing, which space did the driver get to drive against? If the police have room to set up barricades then there was no traffic impedance in the first place. So why where they there?

3. The police said the officer shot against tires.
How poorly trained was the officer that a shot against tires trained that he hit a enger?

4. Since when did shooting at vehicles become an acceptable means of stopping a vehicle that wasn't posing harm to anyone?

The police statement is just cock womble.

The question is does driving against traffic warrant the application of live bullets?

I don't understand 2 things...

Why was the driver running from a search?
Are the police officers not trained to aim and shoot accurately?
How will the family of the victim be compensated
Hope the driver will rot away in jail and the police whose fire arm killed the victim, hope he will go to rehab after being released for voluntary man slaughter??

This is one of the reasons why it's important to have an accurate database of every vehicle in the country...

How i wish this was the case... No need to chase the fool or shoot after him... Na to go block am or alert other police officers in the area to look out for the idiot....
May the soul of the dead rest in peace..

It's sad to know that incidents like these could have been avoided...
May God heal Nigeria..
Alot is going on that is beyond human comprehension and solution

Chai. Whoever drafted this press release needs sanction. Imagine that paragraph 4? Looking at the attached pix clearly shows that d bullet was not shot from the rear as the rear shield is still intact. But why on earth would a police shot live ammunition in such area? The casualty could be more than one. Who aims live ammunition at a tire of a moving vehicle from the rear? Shior. You claimed to suspect a case of abduction, but it's you that now gunned down the supposed victim. But why was the man driving against traffic and didn't stop for police. It's within the city now.

Unprofessional police force. Must they shoot in such scenario. Judging by the magnitude of population in that Gbagi area especially in afternoon, those trigger happy policemen shudnt hv shot now. Why can't they keep chasing the car until he's caught.

C'mon. And it's not asif the driver was armed like we used to hv in US,even in US I used to watch video of police car chases without shooting.

This what happens when u recruits 18 years old into police and leave behind experienced and and mature citizens who can use their discretion to act professionally when under pressure. What a sad commentary

Why was the father was following one way? And what kind of incompetent police aims at the tires but then hitting the back glass? The story doesn’t add up.

Rip to the deceased. But why was the father driving against traffic? If the press release is true, the police has no fault in this issue. The father also needs to be arrested and charged to court. And lastly, the police needs training in handling their rifle

The police aimed the gun at the tire but it hits person behind the driver😀😀.
In common sense, one would infer that the bullet was aimed at the driver since the police was already behind. It hits the deceased because he was behind the driver shekina.

Meanwhile Rip to the dead, it's quite unfortunate.
Driver please next time the police waved you. That's if this story is be believed
